Born in 1946 in Paris, Gérard Garouste lives and works in Paris and Normandy. He is one of the leading figures in French art. As both painter and sculptor, he is obsessed by the origins of our culture, myths and the legacy left us by the old masters. His own life is the springboard for his work on ‘dismantling images and words’ and his fascination with the questions of origins, time and transmission. His paintings are born of associations of ideas. Now unsettling, now joyful, they teem with animals, some of them fantastical, and a cast of different characters. His sources range from the Bible to popular culture and literary greats, from Cervantes to Rabelais.
Centre Pompidou – Retrospective
The National museum of modern art – Centre Pompidou opened a large-scale retrospective dedicated to Gérard Garouste, one of the most important contemporary French painters and an advocate of uncompromising figuration.
Alongside 120 major paintings, often of very large format, the exhibition provides space for the artist’s installations, sculptures and graphical works. This retrospective enables us to grasp the full richness of the unclassifiable career of artist whose life and enigmatic body of work, governed by study but also by madness, sustain each other in a gripping dialogue.

WebsiteMeeting with Gérard Garouste, a major figure in French painting – conference
Charlotte Chastel-Rousseau, co-curator of the ongoing Greco exhibition in Paris, interviews Gérard Garouste, a major figure in French painting and great admirer of the Spanish master, at the Grand Palais as part of the “Greco à deux voix” series of talks.
Gérard Garouste questions the origins of our culture, ancient masters’ heritage and the myths. His paintings are in turn disturbing and joyful, populated by different characters sometimes close to those of Greco. Spanish painting, of which he loves the strength, the colours, the profusion of blacks and the mystical side, had a fundamental role in his decision to become a painter.

WebsiteGérard Garouste et l’école des prophètes – Solo show
This Summer, Gérard Garouste has expressed the wish to install some of his works in the new rooms of the Remembrance Place of Chambon sur Lignon. Familiar with the Talmud, the artist wanted to know more about these young Jews, who in the darkest hours of Nazism had reflected on the revival of Jewish thought by calling themselves, with a touch of provocation, the School of prophets.
Gérard Garouste’s painting draws its inspiration from the Talmudic tradition, the horror of the Shoah and its personal history. The exhibition offers a journey between painting and biblical texts, between art and history, around a selection of paintings that resonate with the reflections of this group of thinkers.

Gérard Garouste, one of the most popular French artists of his generation, is marking spring 2018 with three new exhibitions in Paris: at Galerie Templon, the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, and the Beaux-Arts de Paris.
For his exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (March 13 – July 1), Gérard Garouste has taken a close interest in the myth of Diana and Actaeon, one of the most beautiful tales recounted by the Latin poet Ovid (43 BC – 17 AD) in his Metamorphoses: The myth, that examines perception, desire and capture, offered the perfect subject for Gérard Garouste. The result, going far beyond simply fulfilling a first 2015 commission awarded by the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, was a series of studies, drawings and canvasses all based on the theme ; providing an echo of older works illustrating the same theme and forming part of the permanent collections.

This is a very singular exhibition which will be presented this summer at the Hauterives Palace / Drôme. Singular in two ways. For the first time, Gérard Garouste – emblematic figure of French painting – and his wife, Elizabeth Garouste – designer – exhibit together. For the first time, this is their shared passion for « art brut » (outsider art) that get them together, right here where Facteur Cheval erected his famous Ideal Palace, considered as the international reference of « art brut ».
Quite naturally, the extravagant creations of David Rochline – Elizabeth’s brother, deceased in 2015, found their place in this exciting family venture, like the ones of children from La Source association, henceforth at the heart of their artistic and civic concerns.

Kitaj or Anselm Kiefer, the exhibition reveals how this medieval Jewish legend still effects today in a globalized imaginary world.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Mons (BAM) is dedicating a major exhibition to French painter Gérard Garouste, gathering over 80 works, some of them monumental in size. This selection will give an original overview of his entire career. The exhibition was mainly and for the first time conceived following the framework of Cervantes novel Don Quixote . Salle Saint-Georges – at a stone’s throw from BAM – will host an installation specially designed by Garouste. It invites visitors to lose themselves among the twists and turns of a labyrinth created out of around 35 monumental canvases – a unique physical and visual experience.
This exhibition, curated by Bernard Marcelis and Xavier Roland, BAM’s Director, will also exclusively reveal two of his sketch books – a rare opportunity that allows us to enter the private world of his artistic process.

En chemin
The Maeght Foundation dedicates its summer exhibition, which will exceptionally run until the 29 November, to French painter Gérard Garoust.
En chemin is an opportunity to discover a set of about 80 paintings, sculptures and drawings with new works, specially created in 2015. The exhibition’s retrospective dimension is completed by a strong focus on the current researchs of Gérard Garouste. It also presents unpublished notebooks, offering the visitor a look behind the scenes of the painter-alchemist. The exhibition layout proposes a provocative journey of interpretations and free associations.
Gérard Garouste’s popularity is only equaled by his singularity. “Never ask directions from someone who knows the way, you risk not getting lost”*: this quote tells all about the whole process of the artist, who chooses figuration, the study of myths and founding archetypes to better explore human intimacytoday.

Painters and sculptors collaborated with the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, creating works which were integrated into the building and the surrounding natural environment: the Giacometti courtyard, the Miró labyrinth with its sculptures and ceramics, the mosaic murals of Chagall and Tal Coat, Braque’s pond and stained glass window and Bury’s fountain. Indoor and outdoor spaces link up with each other through the sculpture garden, the courtyards, terraces and patios.
