Sudarshan Shetty
L’artiste
Né en 1961 à Mangalore, Sudarshan Shetty vit et travaille à Mumbai en Inde. D’abord formé comme peintre, il s’ouvre plus tard à la sculpture et aux installations, qui constituent désormais l’ensemble de son œuvre. Cet artiste conceptuel est connu pour ses installations sculpturales énigmatiques, souvent animées. Ses constructions hybrides et poétiques interrogent la fusion des traditions indiennes et occidentales mais aussi les préoccupations domestiques et la question du mouvement.

Sudarshan Shetty sera le commissaire de l’exposition d’arts plastiques du Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF), l’une des plus grandes initiatives artistiques multidisciplinaires de la région de l’Asie du Sud.
Son projet Look Outside This House vise à présenter des inventions indigènes et des industries informelles qui ont pour but de répondre aux besoins circonstanciels à l’impact social durable sur les communautés dans leur ensemble. L’exposition soulignera la nécessité de soutenir et d’encourager différentes approches autochtones, pour la production de connaissances qui se situent en dehors du cadre des institutions traditionnelles.

A l’occasion de la 58e Biennale de Venise, Jan Fabre, Prune Nourry et Sundarshan Shetty, participent à l’édition 2019 de Glasstress sous le commissariat de Vik Muniz et Koen Vanmechelen. La sixième édition de Glasstress réunit une nouvelle sélection d’artistes contemporains de premier plan venus d’Europe, des États-Unis, d’Amérique latine, de l’Inde et de la Chine, et explore les possibilités créatives infinies du verre. Glasstress est un projet d’Adriano Berengo dédié à soutenir sa mission d’associer l’art contemporain et le verre. Depuis ses débuts en 2009 en tant qu’événement off de la Biennale de Venise, Glasstress a ravivé l’art traditionnel du soufflage du verre de Murano en forgeant de nouvelles alliances avec artistes et designers de renommée internationale et est devenu depuis une plate-forme sans précédent pour la présentation d’œuvres en verre inédites et novatrices.

L’exposition de Sudarshan Shetty « Shoonya Ghar » porte le titre d’une œuvre poétique du poète indien Gorakhnath, datant du XIIème siècle et qui a également influencé son célèbre successeur Kabir.
Elle présente une installation multimédia monumentale qui marie différents media – sculpture, objets trouvés, film, et aborde les conventions de représentation de la naissance, de la mort, de la danse, du jeu et de la violence.

Intitulée ‘The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed’, la Biennale de Sydney 2016 réunit 83 artistes de 35 pays, exposés dans une vingtaine de lieux dont les plus grandes institutions artistiques de la ville et l’ile Cockatoo Island dans le port de Sydney.
Plus de 200 œuvres, couvrant tous les media – avec une attention particulière portée à la performance – seront présentées au public.
La directrice artistique Stephanie Rosenthal a travaillé en association avec un conseil réunissant 13 commissaires d’expositions, conservateurs, auteurs et théoriciens internationaux.

Sudarshan Shetty (b. 1961) is a leading contemporary artist living in Bombay. His practice encompasses painting, drawing, installation, video/film and sculpture. He has exhibited widely both in India and internationally. He has been appointed artistic director and curator of the third edition of the Kochi Muziris Biennale. The artist lives and works in Mumbai. The exhibition comprises an entirely new body of work in various media: video/film, sculptural installation and photographic images. The work draws on a poetic work by 12th century poet Gorakhnath. These poetic traditions populated their verses with the concrete symbolism of the built world and things within it, with references to nature and the environment as metaphors for the body and its beyond.

commissaire de Biennale de Kochi Muziris en 2016. Basé à Mumbai, Sudarshan Shetty est l’un des artistes indiens les plus innovants de sa génération. Il s’est fait connaître par ses installations sculpturales énigmatiques. L’artiste a exprimé le souhait de travailler à une vision de la Biennale tournée vers ‘le peuple’. Les deux premières éditions de la Biennale de Kochi-Muziris, en 2012 et 2014, ont attiré près d’un million de visiteurs. En tant que projet d’art contemporain, la Biennale a contribué à renouveler le positionnement culturel de l’Inde, et a installé Kochi et l’état du Kerala en Inde sur la carte culturelle mondiale.
