WILLKOMMEN IM LABYRINTH – GROUP SHOW

Labyrinths are based on complex systems that challenge our orientation in a playful way. In a globalized world they become symbolic signs that give the growing feeling of confusion a tangible form. The motif of the labyrinth has also gained new significance in art. The room structures, many of which were developed especially for the exhibition, invite you to lose your way with passion, and to experience the search for orientation as a productive force.

Prune Nourry

THE AMAZON – SOLO SHOW

French artist Prune Nourry’s Amazon is to be installed and unveiled on the Standard High Line Plaza. A13 feet tall Amazonian woman with a wounded breast, the sculpture was inspired by Greek mythology and a marble statue on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On June 21 this contemporary urban warrior made of winterstone will be celebrated in a musical incense ceremony and live performance by the artist accompanied by Jon Batiste on solo piano at The Standard Plaza.

Rooted in her intimate experience of breast cancer, and echoing a once claimed tradition that the Amazons cut off their right breast to be more competent archers, Prune Nourry will later on break one of the breasts from The Amazon’s bust in a cathartic gesture, during a secret ceremony.

Similar to Destruction Is Not The End – a ruined, fragmented monumental Buddha created by Prune Nourry for the Museum of National Asian Arts in Paris – The Amazon is partly covered with red incense sticks, recalling both acupuncture needles and ex-votos. She evokes a deity calling for care and healing – her gaze is iridescent, her glass eyes making her feel alive. The concrete woman aims to deliver a message to all women, warriors and survivors.

Nourry’s Amazon will be on display in The Plaza at The Standard, High Line until the end of June. Following the installation’s residency at The Standard, the sculpture will be sold at auction; part of the proceeds will be donated toward education regarding cancer-preventative lifestyles, wellness, and support for women living with cancer.

INAUGURATION June 21 – Performance by the artist pomptly at 9 pm – arrival time 8:45 pm suggested

Valerio Adami

ADAMI : LIGNES DE VIE – SOLO SHOW

Museum Jean Cocteau in Menton presents a major exhibition of Valerio Adami, gathering  a body of paintings, drawings and photographs from the late 1960s until today.

Born in Bologna in 1935, Adami is a painter, a drawer and a printmaker. After his first solo exhibition in Milano (1957) when he was still very largely influenced by Roberto Matta’s surrealism, the artist soon followed the  path of European New Figuration and Narrative Figuration

Oscillating in between line and colour as well as in between drawing and painting, Valerio Adami’s work  can be perceived as a kind of writing in itself,  an exploration through mythology, poetry and the intimacy of an artist. The museum Jean Cocteau / collection Séverin Wunderman, proposes a journey through the artist’s half a century creation.

Jan Fabre

MY QUEENS – SOLO SHOW

With “My Queens”, Fabre honours the important women in his life while simultaneously creating a dialogue with the Flemish artistic tradition within the historic setting of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Amongst the works of baroque master Jacques Jordaens, Fabre presents eight monumental marble bas-reliefs of women close to him. Their regal profile contrasts with their paper party hats. These pieces represent the noble character of the artist’s friendships and the festive atmosphere connected with it.

In the centre of the room, the work “My Future Queen” can be found: a white marble sculpture of Her Royal Highness Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, also wearing a party hat. The statue of the Crown Princess is at the centre of different artistic dialogues in the space and stands right between the present and the past, looking towards the future.

Jim Dine

IN VIVO – PERFORMANCE

On the occasion of the Paris Reconnaissance show dedicated to Jim Dine’s substantial donation to Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou, the american artist will be presenting ‘House of Words’, a reading and performance accompagnied with bassist Daniele Roccato and pianist Fabrizio Ottaviucci, at Centre Pompidou.

Now world famous as a poet and artist, Jim Dine (b. Cincinatti, 1935) moved to New York in 1958. After making a name for himself with his happenings, he then turned to paintings that combined Abstract Expressionism with Pop images to novel effect. In painting and sculpture, prints and drawings of great diversity, Dine has developed over the last sixty years an intensely personal iconography, a highly distinctive voice.

The artist has always been fascinated by the interaction in between words and images, and he has been been publishing poetry since 1969. First written and reworked on the walls, his poems transform writing into a physical experience.

Curators : Sophie Duplaix (MNAM) – Cristina Agostinelli. The ‘In Vivo’ cycle is dedicated to performative practices.

DIANE ET ACTAEON – SOLO SHOW

Gérard Garouste, one of the most popular French artists of his generation, is marking spring 2018 with three new exhibitions in Paris: at Galerie Templon, the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, and the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

For his exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (March 13 – July 1), Gérard Garouste has taken a close interest in the myth of Diana and Actaeon, one of the most beautiful tales recounted by the Latin poet Ovid (43 BC – 17 AD) in his Metamorphoses: The myth, that examines perception, desire and capture, offered the perfect subject for Gérard Garouste. The result, going far beyond simply fulfilling a first 2015 commission awarded by the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, was a series of studies, drawings and canvasses all based on the theme ; providing an echo of older works illustrating the same theme and forming part of the permanent collections.
