Born in 1962 in Brooklyn, Gregory Crewdson lives and works in New York. A leading figure in American photography, he stages his photographs like films, using actors, sets, props people, storyboards and make-up artists. In this way, he addresses the dark side of the American dream as well as his own psychological issues. He believes that only photography always remains silent. There is no before and no after. The events it captures do not unveil their mystery.

American Photography – solo show

Summer goes with vacation. It is a time for going out, for walking in the middle of nature, for bathing in the sea. It is the period when we pick up fruits, where we cultivate our garden, where we spend time with our family and friends, where we meet people. It is about camping, swimming, tanning on the beach, sailing, surfing, paragliding, discovering new places, traveling. Because of the pandemic we were likely to forget it.

Through their works and installations, the guest artists bring this back to life, and rekindle our emotions.

LE MAUVAIS OEIL – group show

Major photographer Gregory Crewdson takes part in the exhibition “The Evil Eye”, held at the FRAC Auvergne. The exhibition, based both on the female figure of the Oracle and on the prediction and signs of a global collapse, is an artistic reflection on the state of our contemporary world. The evil eye, an archaic figure of anathema, finds its most diverse variations in this exhibition.

Gregory Crewdson: Cathedral of the Pines – solo show

Camerimage Film Festival and the Centre of Contemporary Art ‘Znaki Czasu’ in Toruń are pleased to present new photographs by Gregory Crewdson, in collaboration with Gagosian New York.

The work of the American photographer Gregory Crewdson has gained great acclaim from both critics and art collectors worldwide. His photographs are an embodiment of sophistication: meticulously composed and executed with great attention to detail, they easily engrave themselves in the viewer’s memory. Some of Crewdson’s earlier series had been planned months in advance and created with the help of a team of up to 40 people, which naturally evokes associations with a movie set. During his 20 years of activity as a photographer, his unmistakable style has won him global recognition. His latest project, Cathedral of the Pines, however, is his most intimate endeavour yet.

Before coming to the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń, Cathedral of the Pines was both exhibited at Gagosian in New York, where it was received with great acclaim. Toruń will be the second of two European cities to hold the exhibition, the other being London.
On Sunday, November 12, the Centre of Contemporary Art will hold a meeting with the artist.

GREGORY CREWDSON IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ART HISTORIAN MICHEL POIVERT

On the occasion of the two concurrently exhibitions « Cathedral of the Pines » at Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris and Brussels, the American artist Gregory Crewdson is presenting his most recent body of work in a talk with Michel Poivert, art historian specialized in photography.

In images that recall nineteenth-century painting, Crewdson captures motionless figures in both natural environments and domestic interiors, charged with ambiguity. Ever since his nocturnal Twilight series (1998–2002), Crewdson has worked with a full crew, planning his elaborately staged images in a process similar to that of a movie director. His use of the codes governing the cinema of fantasy films, psychological drama and suspense conjures forebears such as Diane Arbus, Alfred Hitchcock and Edward Hopper.

These new works were shot on location in Becket, Massachusetts, where Crewdson retreated, in search of inspiration. ‘It was deep in the forests of Becket, Massachusetts that I finally felt darkness lift, experienced a reconnection with my artistic process, and moved into a period of renewal and intense creative productivity,’ he explains.
