Frank Stella

L’artiste

Né en 1936 à Malden dans le Massachusetts aux États-Unis, Frank Stella décède en 2024. D’abord influencé par l’expressionisme abstrait, il en rejette finalement le lyrisme. Frank Stella est l’une des figures de proue de la peinture minimaliste des années 1960, se consacrant aux rapports entre forme et couleur. Créateur des « toiles découpées », dont la forme sort de la géométrie classique, la tridimensionnalité de ses peintures évolue jusqu’à l’amener à faire de véritables sculptures dans les années 1980.

Le Whitney Museum présente une rétrospective exceptionnelle de l’œuvre de Frank Stella, l’un des plus grands artistes américains vivants. Cette exposition, la plus complète à ce jour, réunira plus d’une centaine d’œuvres, de la moitié des années 1950 à nos jours, comprenant peintures, reliefs, maquettes, sculptures et dessins.
