Pour cette installation, Shiota a choisi de travailler avec du fil rouge, une couleur qu’elle associe au sang, au corps et aux relations humaines. Dans le vaste enchevêtrement de son “dessin tridimensionnel”, l’artiste a tissé des histoires personnelles de naissance, d’enfance, de famille et de pays, de religion, d’amour et de mort. Chacune d’entre elles a été écrite par une personne du Kosovo.

For this installation, Shiota has chosen to work with red yarn, a colour she associates with blood, the body and human relationships. Into the vast entanglement of her “three-dimensional drawing”, the artist has woven personal stories of birth, childhood, family and country, religion, love and death. Each was written by someone from Kosovo.

Dédiée à l’enfance à rebours de l’art préhistorique, une quarantaine de toiles ardentes, baroques et complexes tissent une caverne déroutante et singulière, imprégnée de la puissance originelle de la peinture. De ce tourbillon se dégage une réflexion complexe que l’artiste, nouvellement père, interroge sur l’innocence de l’art et de l’homme en prise avec l’Histoire et la mémoire, entre mythologie, littérature et anthropologie. Pour se faire, Orsten Groom a convoqué le grand pré-historien et spécialiste d’art pariétal Jean-Michel Geneste ( ancien conservateur et directeur des recherches de la grotte de Lascaux, du patrimoine et directeur du Centre national de la Préhistoire, et du programme d’étude pluridisciplinaire de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc ), avec qui un entretien fleuve est reproduit dans le catalogue spécialement édité pour l’occasion.

Dedicated to childhood in contrast to prehistoric art, forty fiery, baroque and complex canvases weave a disconcerting and singular cave, impregnated with the original power of painting. From this whirlwind emerges a complex reflection that the artist, a new father, questions on the innocence of art and man in the grip of history and memory, between mythology, literature and anthropology. To do this, Orsten Groom called the great prehistorian and specialist in cave art, Jean-Michel Geneste (former curator and director of research at the Lascaux cave, heritage and director of the National Center for Prehistory and the multidisciplinary study program of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave), with whom a lengthy interview has been reproduced in the catalog published on the occasion.

Le corps dans tous ses états est une donnée fondamentale de la création contemporaine : peinture, dessin, estampe, installation, céramique, vidéogramme… Extériorisé, réifié en quelque sorte, il s’écarte de la poignante littéralité du corps de l’artiste du Body Art. Le corps que l’on devine, que l’on traverse, qui s’impose, qui tombe, qui s’envole, qui se répand, que l’on divise… Tout est affaire de pesanteur, de souffle et de matière. Lourd léger raconte un corps à la recherche du repos, de l’humour, de la gravité et du fantastique. L’art classique nous a légué un corpus de métamorphoses et de rêveries.

The body in all its states is a fundamental data of the contemporary creation: painting, drawing, print, installation, ceramics, videogram… Externalized, reified in a way, it departs from the poignant authenticity of the body of the artist of Body Art. The body that we guess, that we cross, that imposes itself, that falls, that flies away, that spreads, that we divide… Everything is about weight, breath and matter. Lourd léger tells the story of a body in search of rest, humor, gravity and fantasy. Classical art has bequeathed us a body of metamorphoses and reveries.

Ici, Navarro invoque la forme emblématique des châteaux d’eau, étroitement associée à la ligne d’horizon de New York, une ville où les immigrants du monde entier se rassemblent à la recherche d’une vie meilleure. La chanson de Guthrie de 1940 critiquait la privatisation des ressources aux États-Unis auxquelles, selon lui, tous devraient avoir accès, y compris l’eau. La référence au droit des nations autochtones à cette terre et à leur rôle essentiel dans la protection de l’eau potable est particulièrement absente de la chanson de Guthrie. En fin de compte, l’installation de Navarro soulève des questions sur la façon dont les nations liées par des histoires coloniales pourraient remodeler leur avenir.

Starting June 25, 2022

Here, Navarro invokes the iconic form of water towers, closely associated with the skyline of New York City, a city where immigrants from around the world gather in search of a better life. Guthrie’s 1940 song criticized the privatization of resources in the United States that he believed all should have access to, including water. Notably absent from Guthrie’s song is reference to Indigenous Nations’ right to this land and critical role in protecting clean water. Ultimately, Navarro’s installation raises questions about how nations linked by colonial histories might reshape their futures.

Avec cette nouvelle série réalisée en 2020 pendant le confinement, Iván Navarro embarque le spectateur dans une ballade poétique à travers des paysages cosmiques. Constellations, nébuleuses, éclipses, de larges panneaux de verre illuminé s’ouvrent telles des fenêtres vers l’infini de l’espace. A la fois sublimes et intrigantes ces cartographies imaginaires s’interrogent sur les limites de l’astronomie, les représentations mentales et l’anthropocentrisme.

Both sublime and intriguing, these imaginary cartographies question the limits of astronomy, mental representations and anthropocentrism.

Réalisée à quatre mains entre les commissaires d’exposition Amélie Adamo et Lucile Hitier, l’exposition soutient une sélection d’artistes qui ont – à un moment de leur vie – dédié leur création à leur famille, leur enfant, au corps habité, au corps nourricier ou à la pratique artistique à quatre mains.

“Mettre au monde” questions the complex interaction between creation, begetting, public and private spheres, intimacy and extimacy while questioning the tenuous balance between these worlds in the life of an artist, parent, active and independent evolving notably in the field of visual arts still too little structured in the social support of its actors. The exhibition “Mettre au monde” (Bringing into the world) was created by the curators Amélie Adamo and Lucile Hitier. It supports a selection of artists who have – at some point in their lives – dedicated their work to their family, their child, to the inhabited body, to the nurturing body or to the artistic practice of four hands.
