Manifesta, la biennale européenne itinérante présente cet automne une nouvelle exposition, Real Utopias. Construite autour d’œuvres dont le fil rouge est l’imagination d’un lieu qui n’a pas encore été érigé, l’utopie – ū et tópos- est un lieu qui n’existe pas et où s’imaginent des mondes autres. Toutes ces constructions imaginaires participent d’une manière ou d’une autre à des projets de transformation de la réalité. Peintures, vidéo, dessins, œuvres multimedia et sculptures révèleront les aspirations communes et l’esprit expérimental des différentes générations d’artistes qui imaginent de nouvelles manières d’habiter l’espace, qu’il soit physique, imaginaire ou corporel.

The European Nomadic Biennal, Manifesta is presenting a new Fall exhibition:  Real Utopias.  Conceived around works that all focus on the imagination of a place that has not been constructed yet, utopia – is a place that does not exist, where other worlds are imagined. All these imaginary constructions participate in transforming the reality. Paintings, video, drawings, multimedia works and sculptures will reveal the common aspirations and experimental approach of different generations of artists who imagine new ways of occupying space, be it physical, imaginary or corporeal.

C’est la plus grande exposition de la collection de la Fondation jamais organisée.  Elle est composée de 228 pièces composées d’œuvres de 61 artistes portugais sélectionnés parmi les 1000 qui composent la collection. Feast Fury. Femina met à l’honneur la collection, évoque la dimension performative inhérente aux pratiques artistiques contemporaines et met en valeur la dimension féminine, exigeant un regard renouvelé sur l’histoire de l’art.

L’exposition propose de découvrir le réalisme fantastique, mouvement majeur de la contre-culture des années 1960, à travers les œuvres d’artistes contemporains qui remettent en question les savoirs dominants et hybrident les connaissances scientifiques et ésotériques. Extravagantes, hermétiques, sensuelles, les œuvres convoquent les survivances de cultures traditionnelles, mythiques ou magiques, invitent à sonder les états de conscience modifiés, les limites de nos perceptions sensorielles, les codes cachés de la nature et les lois encore indéchiffrables qui régissent le cosmos.

Abdelkader Benchamma takes part in the exhibition « UN AUTRE MONDE/// DANS NOTRE MONDE » held at the FRAC Nord-pas de Calais.The exhibition proposes to discover the fantastic realism, a major movement of the counterculture of the 1960s, through the works of contemporary artists who question the dominant knowledge and hybridize scientific and esoteric knowledge. Extravagant, hermetic, sensual, the works summon the survival of traditional, mythical or magical cultures. They invite to probe the altered states of consciousness, the limits of our sensory perceptions, the hidden codes of nature and the undecipherable laws that govern the cosmos.

L’exposition « Global(e) Resistance » dévoile pour la première fois les œuvres de plus d’une soixantaine d’artistes réunies au cours de la dernière décennie, dont les deux artistes sénégalais et sud-africaine Omar Ba et Billie Zangewa. L’exposition aux nombreux médias pose des interrogations théoriques, qui vont de l’articulation de l’esthétique et du politique au rapport même du musée au politique, au sein des mondes de l’art. Le principe de résister, étudié à travers une pratique à la fois artistique et politique, voire activiste, a souvent été l’apanage d’artistes vivant dans des situations d’oppression ou d’inégalités.

Du 10 juillet au 1er novembre, le Centre d’Art de la Malmaison sur la Croisette, accueille l’une des stars internationales les plus recherchées d’aujourd’hui, l’américain Kehinde Wiley. À travers plus d’une vingtaine d’œuvres, le Centre d’art la Malmaison dévoile le dessein épique qui anime le travail de l’artiste depuis plus d’une décennie. Puisant son inspiration dans la peinture classique, du Titien à Gainsborough en passant par Van Dyck ou Ingres, Kehinde Wiley propose une perspective unique, politique et esthétique. En choisissant de rendre visible les invisibles de l’histoire, il interroge les spectateurs sur les questions de perception, de pouvoir et d’origine.Depuis 2006, dans le cadre de son projet The World Stage, Kehinde Wiley sillonne le monde, des favelas de Rio aux faubourgs de New Dehli, pour organiser des castings de rue dans des ateliers ad hoc. De ses rencontres impromptues avec ces jeunes noirs ou métisses, hommes ou femmes, naissent des portraits baroques saturés, empreints des vestiges et de la pompe des Grands Maîtres du passé. Kehinde Wiley se veut l’héritier de la longue lignée de portraitistes. Il réinterprète le vocabulaire traditionnel de la peinture, en insuflant puissance et prestige à des jeunes hommes et femmes rarement perçus à travers ce prisme.En se plongeant dans les questions d’identité raciale et sexuelle, la peinture de Kehinde Wiley crée un dialogue inattendu où histoire de l’art et culture noire américaine convergent avec grâce. L’artiste place au premier plan ceux qui ont été historiquement banis des cercles du pouvoir. Son œuvre, politiquement engagée, s’interroge sur les notions de race, de représentation, de privilège et d’excès. Au-delà de l’accusation politique, elle interroge les ressorts de l’histoire et ceux qui en définissent les termes.À travers cette rétrospective exceptionnelle, la première en France, se dessine la tentative de remettre en cause les canons de l’histoire de l’art tout en contribuant à leur construction. Kehinde Wiley nous invite, nous autres européens, à nous réapproprier une peinture dont nous avons, peut-être, oublié la vitalité alors que notre continent connaît une crise d’identité majeure et en constante évolution. Accueillir à Cannes une telle exposition monographique de Kehinde Wiley concrétise l’aspiration internationale de la ville en matière d’art contemporain.

From July 10th to November 1st 2020, the Centre d’Art de La Malmaison on the Croisette welcomes one of today’s most sought after international stars, the American artist Kehinde Wiley. The Centre d’Art la Malmaison unveils over 20 epic works, representative of the vast vocabulary that has guided the artist’s work for more than a decade. Drawing his inspiration from the Old Masters, from Titian and Gainsborough to Van Dyck and Ingres, Wiley presents a uniquely political and aesthetic perspective, making visible history’s invisible figures, allowing the viewer to engage with the notions of perception as it pertains to power and place.llKehinde Wiley has traversed the world since 2006 as part of his The World Stage series, whereby organizing local studios and utilizing street casting of denizens from the favelas of Rio to the cramped streets of New Dehli. He uses chance encounters with young Black and brown men and women to create Baroque portraits, brimming with the vestiges and fanfare of the Old Masters. Kehinde Wiley is a descendent of that long line of portraitists. He offers reinterpretations of traditional easel painting vernacular, instilling power and prestige onto the young men and women who are rarely viewed as such.llDelving into the issues of racial and sexual identity, Kehinde Wiley’s works create unexpected conversations where art history and Black culture emerge fluidly. The artist brings to the forefront those who have historically been banished from the halls of power and the access found therein. His politically charged work is an investigation of race, representation, privilege, and excess. They are an indictment on history and who determines its definition.llThrough this majestic retrospective, the first in France, one can fathom how a vast body of work can both question and participate in the Western art historical canon of portraiture. Kehinde Wiley invites us, we Europeans, to rediscover a painting whose artistic intensity we have, perhaps, forgotten at a time when the continent is experiencing an identity crises that is continuously evolving. Welcoming such a monographic exhibition to Cannes, Kehinde Wiley materializes the international aspirations the city has regarding the importance of contemporary art.

The Momentary annonce l’exposition d’un nouveau projet d’art visuel par Iván Navarro intitulé “This land is your Land”. L’installation gratuite est située dans une annexe de l’espace d’art contemporain Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville, Arkansas).Inspiré par la célèbre chanson de Woody Guthrie (1940) du même nom, Iván Navarro a construit une série de trois châteaux d’eau, représentant l’histoire de l’immigration en Amérique et aux États-Unis. Pendant la Grande Dépression, le château d’eau est devenu le symbole de la prospérité économique, représentant espoir et opportunité aux yeux des travailleurs nomades. D’après Navarro, « à chaque fois qu’ils apercevaient un château d’eau, ils sautaient du train, car cela témoignait d’une activité économique dans cette ville ». Les visiteurs peuvent se placer sous le château et lever les yeux vers un message symbolique, inspiré de l’histoire personnelle de Navarro en tant qu’immigrant. Avant de s’installer dans l’Arkansas, “This Land is your land” était auparavant exposé au Madison Square Garden de New York, et plus récemment au Navy Pier de Chicago (USA).

The Momentary, a satellite contemporary art space to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville, Arkansas), announces a new visual art project by Iván Navarro, free for the public to experience. 
Inspired by Woody Guthrie’s iconic 1940 song of the same name, Iván Navarro’s series of three water towers examines the history of migration in the Americas and the United States. During the Great Depression, the water tower became a symbol of hope and opportunity for nomadic workers. According to Navarro, “every time they saw a water tower, they jumped out of the train because it signaled economic activity in that town.” Visitors can step beneath the towers and look up at the repeated messages that are inspired by Navarro’s personal history as an immigrant. 
 
Before making its way to the Momentary, ‘This Land is Your Land’ was previously on view in Madison Square Garden in New York City, and most recently at the Navy Pier in Chicago (USA).

Ce printemps, l’Expo Hall de Warande à Turnhout en Belgique, accueillera une exposition collective sur un thème familier aux yeux de tous : la nuit.
Avant l’introduction de la lumière artificielle, les nuits étaient plongées dans l’obscurité. Le jour et la nuit constituaient deux mondes complètement séparés. La nuit était parfois comparée à un univers parallèle, avec ses propres rituels, odeurs et sons, où l’on pouvait échapper à la réalité quotidienne, aux conventions sociales et aux hiérarchies. Aujourd’hui encore, nous vivons la nuit comme un moment unique. Les artistes sont souvent inspirés par ce monde à la fois familier et mystérieux. This spring, the Expo Hall at de Warande in Turnhout, Belgium, will host a group exhibition on a theme everyone is somehow familiar with: the night.
Before artificial light was introduced, nights were intrinsically related to darkness. Day and night were two utterly separate worlds. The night then looked like a parallel universe, with its own rituals, smells and sounds, where one could escape everyday reality, social conventions and hierarchies. Even today we still experience the night-time as a special moment. On their side, artists are often inspired by this realm which is both familiar and mysterious.
