For the first time in Europe Jan Fabre presents Ecstasy and Oracles for the occasion of Manifesta12 organised by Mondo Mostre, Palermo Capitale della Cultura 2018, Regione Siciliana. The scarab, ancient symbol of metamorphosis and an early alter-ego of artist Jan Fabre – the holy dung beetle of Antwerp – is central to the exhibition in Monreale. Small bronzes refer to the vital quest of the artist while the life-size bronze sculpture, The man who bears the cross, balances the limits of faith. A cycle of large mosaics made with jewel beetle wing-cases explores the eternal cycle of life and death, reoccurring in Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas. Curated by Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi. INAUGURATION DES RETABLES DE JAN FABRE POUR L’EGLISE SAINT AUGUSTIN D’ANVERS – COMMANDE PUBLIQUE

EGLISE SAINT AUGUSTIN D’ANVERS (AMUZ), ANVERS, BELGIQUE A partir du 02/07/2018

En 1628, tous les plus grands peintres baroques anversois sont chargés par l’Ordre de Saint-Augustin de réaliser un retable pour l’église : Pierre Paul Rubens peint la toile du maître-autel, qui représente la Sainte Famille avec des Saints (aussi appelée Le Mariage mystique de Sainte-Catherine), tandis que Jacob Jordaens et Antoine Van Dyck enjolivent les autels Apolline et Augustin avec, à droite, le Martyre de Sainte Apolline et, à gauche, l’Extase de Saint Augustin. Aujourd’hui, ces trois oeuvres se trouvent au Musée royal des Beaux-Arts, où elles font partie de la collection permanente. Dans le cadre du projet Antwerp Baroque 2018, le vide causé par cette situation a été comblé par la création d’un projet conforme à la tradition historique des missions d’église et de leur rénovation, projet qui a été confié à l’artiste anversois contemporain le plus complet et donc le plus rubénien : Jan Fabre. Les nouvelles oeuvres, qui seront intégrées de façon permanente dans l’église Saint-Augustin, deviendront un nouveau but de découverte culturelle et artistique dans le paysage artistique anversois.

In 1628, the Antwerp trinity of Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck received the assignment from the Augustinian monks to make altarpieces for their cloister church in the Kammenstraat. This year, Jan Fabre is receiving the same honour upon the occasion of Antwerp Baroque 2018. He translates – or rather ‘re-tells’ – the altarpieces of Jordaens, Van Dyck and Rubens in the language of 2018 and frames them in their contemporary context.

A l’invitation des éditions Actes Sud, la jeune artiste française Prune Nourry participe pour la première fois aux rencontres photographiques à Arles. Elle présentera dans les anciens ateliers de la SNCF, un ensemble d’oeuvres réunissant photographies et sculptures, ainsi que son Bouddha monumental récemment créé pour le Musée national des arts asiatiques (Guimet) à Paris.  Les photographies de Prune Nourry retracent ses projets au long cours menés en Chine et en Inde autour du thème de la sélection du sexe de l’enfant. Récits de voyages et des rencontres inédites qu’elle a orchestrés entre ses créatures hybrides et les passants dans les rues de Delhi, elles  capturent et mettent en lumière le processus de création qui fait œuvre à part entière, là où l’image laisse apparaître de la matière, de la terre au lait. Mises en dialogue avec les sculptures de l’artiste – les Holy Daughters, mi-filles mi-vaches sacrées – ces photographies ou « Images sculptées » redoublent les interrogations de Prune Nourry sur le statut de la femme et les détournements de la science, en même tant qu’elles questionnent leur medium. Young French artist Prune Nourry has been invited by publisher Actes Sud to take part for the first time in the Arles Rencontres Photographiques festival. She will be presenting a series of works in a former SNCF workshop featuring photographs and sculptures as well as the giant Buddha she recently created for the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques (Guimet) in Paris.  Prune Nourry’s photographs narrate the long-term projects she has undertaken in China and India on the theme of the gender selection of children. With these travel tales and unexpected encounters orchestrated between her hybrid creatures and passers-by in the streets of Delhi, she captures and highlights the creative process as a participant in its own right, the images revealing the underlying matter, from earth to milk. She creates a dialogue between her sculptures – the Holy Daughters, half girls, half holy cows – and the photographs, or “sculpted images”, which extend her probing of women’s status and the misuse of science while questioning their medium. Du 30 juin au 11 novembre 2018, la Fondation Maeght accueillera l’artiste belge Jan Fabre. L’exposition ‘Ma nation : l’imagination’, conçue spécialement pour l’institution, sera consacrée aux sculptures et dessins de l’artiste – dont de nombreuses œuvres inédites – traitant de la pensée, du corps, des rêves et de l’imaginaire, en dialogue avec les découvertes scientifiques et celles de l’histoire de l’art. Cette exposition « sur-mesure » se veut spirituelle dans tous les sens du terme, à la fois onirique, grave, mais aussi humoristique à la manière de James Ensor. L’esprit et le cerveau y deviennent une source, une terre, un personnage dont l’exposition nous donne à vivre les aventures. Parfois considéré comme provocateur ou iconoclaste, le « mystique contemporain » Jan Fabre, artiste consacré, garde en mémoire le souvenir des Primitifs flamands et des maîtres anciens du baroque flamand et s’appuie sur la tradition pour oser plonger dans l’inconnu : « Le cerveau représente à mes yeux la métaphore de la terra incognita. S’occuper d’art et de beauté, c’est toujours arpenter le sentier de cette terra incognita ». À l’image de la science qui prend appui sur la connaissance pour initier la découverte, la notion d’expérience, à travers l’étude et l’observation , constitue un des fondements du travail et de la démarche de Jan Fabre. From June 30 to November 11, 2018, the Maeght Foundation will welcome Belgian artist Jan Fabre. This “customized” exhibition, designed for the Fondation, will be devoted to his sculptures and drawings – many of them brand new – dealing with the mind, the body, our dreams and especially our imagination, in conversation with scientific discoveries and art history.   Fabre wanted this exhibition to be spiritual in every sense of the word, at once dreamlike and serious but with the irony of games and a humor in the style of James Ensor. The mind and the brain become a source, a land, a character whose adventures we can experience through the show. Sometimes considered provocative and iconoclastic, the “contemporary mystic” Jan Fabre keeps in mind the memory of the Flemish Primitives and the old masters of Flemish Baroque and builds on the tradition to daringly plunge into the unknown: “The brain represents, to me, a metaphor for the terra incognita. Dealing with art and beauty is to always walk along the path of this terra incognita“. Like science which relies on knowledge to initiate discovery, the notion of experience, through the study and observation of things, makes up one of the foundations of Fabre’s work and his approach. Cette exposition rassemble des oeuvres rares de Julião Sarmento, des pièces inédites ou qui n’ont encore jamais été exposées et qui couvrent la carrière de l’un des plus importants artistes portugais. Ces œuvres sont d’ailleurs mis en lien avec certaines périodes et différents domaines dont on n’a, paradoxalement, que peu de trace. Les commissaires de l’exposition ont collaboré avec l’artiste afin de réaliser cet exercice en reconstitution.    Commissaires: Nuno Faria et Filipa Oliveira

L’Amazone monumentale de l’artiste française Prune Nourry, une sculpture de près de 4 mètres inspirée par la mythologie grecque et par l’Amazone blessée présentée dans les collections du Met, s’installe à New York sur la Standard High Line Plaza jusqu’à la fin du mois de juin. Le jeudi 21 juin, cette guerrière urbaine, réalisée en béton argile, sera inaugurée au cours d’une performance de l’artiste accompagnée par Jon Batiste au piano sur la Standard Plaza. En écho à son expérience personnelle du cancer du sein, et à l’histoire des Amazones dont on prétend qu’elles se coupaient le sein droit pour être plus habiles à l’arc, Prune Nourry détruira l’un des seins de l’Amazone  lors d’une future cérémonie cathartique et secrète. A l’image de La destruction n’est pas une fin en soi – Buddha monumental en ruines présenté par Prune Nourry au Musée National des Arts Asiatiques- Guimet à Paris en 2017, L’Amazone est recouverte de bâtons d’encens rouges, renvoyant à la fois à la tradition de l’acupuncture et aux ex–votos.  Elle évoque une divinité appellant à l’attention, aux soins et à la guérison et délivrant un message à toutes les femmes, combattantes et survivantes. La sculpture de l’Amazone sera vendue aux enchères, une partie des bénéfices destinés à la lutte pour l’éducation et la prévention anti-cancer et aux soutiens des femmes atteintes du cancer du sein.  INAUGURATION 21 Juin – Performance 21h00 pile (arrivée suggérée dès 20h45)

THE AMAZON – SOLO SHOW

French artist Prune Nourry’s Amazon is to be installed and unveiled on the Standard High Line Plaza. A13 feet tall Amazonian woman with a wounded breast, the sculpture was inspired by Greek mythology and a marble statue on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  On June 21 this contemporary urban warrior made of winterstone will be celebrated in a musical incense ceremony and live performance by the artist accompanied by Jon Batiste on solo piano at The Standard Plaza.  Rooted in her intimate experience of breast cancer, and echoing a once claimed tradition that the Amazons cut off their right breast to be more competent archers, Prune Nourry will later on break one of the breasts from The Amazon’s bust in a cathartic gesture, during a secret ceremony. Similar to Destruction Is Not The End – a ruined, fragmented monumental Buddha created by Prune Nourry for the Museum of National Asian Arts in Paris – The Amazon is partly covered with red incense sticks, recalling both acupuncture needles and ex-votos. She evokes a deity calling for care and healing – her gaze is iridescent, her glass eyes making her feel alive. The concrete woman aims to deliver a message to all women, warriors and survivors.  Nourry’s Amazon will be on display in The Plaza at The Standard, High Line until the end of June. Following the installation’s residency at The Standard, the sculpture will be sold at auction; part of the proceeds will be donated toward education regarding cancer-preventative lifestyles, wellness, and support for women living with cancer.
