Le titre de l’édition 2019 de la Biennale d’Honolulu est tiré du poème Manifesto œuvre de l’artiste Kanaka Maoli (originiare d’Hawaï) qui participe à la biennale cette année.
La Biennale Honolulu 2019 présente 47 artistes et collectifs d’artistes originaires d’Hawaï et des pays et continents reliés par l’océan Pacifique.

Le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal présente la toute première exposition consacrée au créateur français Thierry Mugler. Conçue, produite et mise en tournée par le MBAM, elle dévoile les multiples univers de cette figure artistique incontournable – couturier visionnaire, metteur en scène, photographe et parfumeur – en revisitant notamment ses créations prêt-à-porter et haute couture. Présentée à Montréal, en première mondiale, cette rétrospective réunit plus de 150 tenues jamais exposées sauf exception, réalisées entre 1973 et 2001, en plus de nombreux documents d’archives inédits et croquis. Une centaine de photographies signées par les plus grands artistes – Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, Pierre et Gilles, David LaChapelle, Paolo Roversi, Herb Ritts, Dominique Issermann, Guy Bourdin et Richard Avedon, pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns – complète l’exposition.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is presenting the very first exhibition on the work of French creator Thierry Mugler. Initiated, produced and circulated by the MMFA, this retrospective reveals the multiple worlds of this irrepressible artistic figure – at once visionary couturier, director, photographer and perfumer – by revisiting his prêt-à-porter and haute couture creations. Premiering in Montreal, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime brings together more than 150 garments made between 1973 and 2001, most of which are being shown for the first time, as well as a wealth of unpublished archival documents and sketches. One hundred or so photographs by such world-renowned fashion photographers as Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, Pierre et Gilles, David LaChapelle, Paolo Roversi, Herb Ritts, Dominique Issermann, Guy Bourdin and Richard Avedon, to name a few, round out the show.

L’exposition “Poesie der Pflanze’ (Poésie de la plante) réunit les travaux de Karl Blossfeldt, photographe allemand (1865-1932) et une quarantaine d’héliogravures de l’artiste américain Jim Dine (1935). Bien que les deux artistes soient de génération différente et représentent des approches artistiques profondément différentes, leurs œuvres témoignent que le mystère de la nature, sa magie comme son ordonnancement, est une source inépuisable d’inspiration créatrice.  Even though the two artists are generations apart and represent very different artistic approaches, their works make it clear that the mystery of nature, its magic as well as its regularity and order, is a never-ending source of creative inspiration.

L’héritage de la Grèce antique et de Rome a eu une influence durable sur les périodes médiévale et moderne. Ces derniers ont absorbé, préservé, assimilé et transformé ce patrimoine. À leur tour, le monde contemporain et la culture populaire (pop) se sont adaptés aux modèles classiques pour donner naissance à de nouveaux héros et à de nouvelles formes d’art dans un contexte mondialisé.L’exposition Age of Classics rassemble des objets antiques et des productions réalisées après l’an 2000 et examine notre relation avec le monde gréco-romain sous différents aspects de notre quotidien: littérature, bande dessinée, cinéma et séries, arts visuels, etc. Comment réinterpréter l’Europe et son patrimoine ? Quel est le lien entre la Grèce, Rome et les Etats-Unis ? Comment et pourquoi l’Asie explore-t-elle l’histoire occidentale dans ses productions culturelles ? Et de quelle manière l’Antiquité s’est-elle prolongée face à la société actuelle ?

The heritage of Ancient Greece and Rome has had a lasting influence on the medieval and modern periods. The latter have absorbed, preserved, assimilated and transformed this heritage. In turn, the contemporary world and popular (pop) culture have appropriated classical models in order to give birth to new heroes and new forms of art in a globalized context. 
Age of Classics brings together antique objects and productions made after the year 2000 and examines our relationship to the Greco-Roman world in various aspects of our daily lives: literature, comics, cinema and series, the visual arts, etc. How does Europe reinterpret its heritage? What is the connection between Greece, Rome and the United States of America? How and why does Asia explore Western history in its cultural productions? And in what ways has Antiquity been perpetuated in the face of today’s evolving society?

 Après l’exposition Tainted Love (Where did our love go) organisée en 2017 à Poitiers pour la réouverture du Confort Moderne, la Villa Arson propose une version « Club Edit » avec la complicité de Yann Chevallier et d’une trentaine d’artistes venant de tous horizons. Cette exposition ne parle pas, l’image est fixe, le son coupé. Des vêtements élégants, des corps fragmentés, des silhouettes suggérées qui dansent sur ce hit aux paroles de coeurs noirs multiplient les effets de suspension et simulent un mysticisme sentimental. Les œuvres posent, les vies se croisent, le sensible s’expose. L’intime, le secret, les alcôves, les chambres et autres lieux de rencontre deviennent l’espace même d’une exhibition, d’un explicite. Les bons sentiments et la morale permettent souvent l’accession au pouvoir des cyniques. Endosser des identités hybrides, réversibles et mouvantes, faites de jeux, de masques, de travestissement, permet de garder entière sa liberté d’embrasser un réel scandaleux.   Commissariat : Yann Chevallier

Following the exhibition Tainted Love (Where did our love go) held in Poitiers in 2017 for the reopening of the Confort Moderne, Villa Arson offers a “Club Edit” version with the complicity of Yann Chevallier and some 30 artists from all walks of life. This exhibit will not speak, the image is still, the sound is off. Elegant attire, fragmented bodies, suggested silhouettes dancing to the hit with words of black hearts, all enhance the feeling of suspension and simulate a sentimental form of mysticism. The pieces pose, lives run into each other, sensitivity reveals itself. Intimacy, secrecy, alcoves, bedrooms and other meeting places become the space itself for an exhibition and an explicit. Cheap sentiments and morality often give power to the cynical. To wear hybrid, reversible and moving identities, made of games, masks and cross-dress ups, means you’re entirely free to embrace a scandalous reality.  Curator: Yann Chevallier

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit will present the first exhibition in the Midwest and most comprehensive show to date of the French art movement Supports/Surfaces. This group of fourteen artists, along with several others who were closely affiliated, lived and worked in the south of France, producing artwork marked by an interest in materiality, a lyrical use of color and expansive ideas of what constitutes a painting. French society was undergoing social protests and upheavals in the 1960s that mirrored the civil rights and anti-war movements in the USA. The Supports/Surfaces artists sought new forms and methods to reflect their times: standard art materials were dropped in favor of homespun non-art materials (bed sheets, rope, dish rags) and figuration was replaced by loose, permeable grids that hinted at a more democratic method of art-making and a proposal for humane society.
