Au tournant des années 1980, Jean-Luc Monterosso, se rend à New York où il rencontre alors le conservateur de la collection photographique du MoMA. Lorsqu’il lui demande ce qu’il pense de la photographie contemporaine française, le couperet tombe : « It doesn’t exist ». Plus de trente ans après, et à l’occasion de son départ de la MEP, Jean-Luc Monterosso répond par une grande exposition sur la photographie française de 1980 à nos jours, qui prend la forme d’un récit très personnel et subjectif. Back in the eighties, Jean-Luc Monterosso traveled to New York where he met MoMA’s photography collection curator. When he asked about his opinion on Contemporary French Photography, the curator simply replied : « It doesn’t exist ». Thirty years later, on the occasion of his departure from the MEP, Jean-Luc Monterosso answers back with an extensive exhibition dedicated to French Photography from the eighties to nowadays under the forms of a really personal and subjective narrative. Du 14 février au 23 avril 2018, le Centre Pompidou expose l’exceptionnelle donation que Jim Dine a faite récemment au Musée national d’art moderne et qui se compose de 26 oeuvres, de peintures et de sculptures, réalisées entre 1961 et 2016. Un don par lequel, Jim Dine, comme il le dit lui-même, voudrait « rembourser la France d’une dette culturelle et personnelle », à savoir les nombreuses années passées à Paris qui lui ont permis d’accéder à « une esthétique » qui a éclairé ses choix. En saluant ce geste, l’exposition retrace de façon saisissante son parcours unique et toujours aussi fécond.

RECONNAISSANCE, THE ARTIST’S GIFT TO THE CENTRE POMPIDOU – SOLO SHOW

From 14 February to 23 April 2018, the Centre Pompidou is exhibiting the remarkable donation Jim Dine recently made to the Musée National d’Art Moderne: 28 paintings and sculptures produced between 1961 and 2016. A gift through which, as the artist puts it, he wanted to «pay back a cultural and personal debt to France» – namely the many years spent in Paris, which introduced him to «an aesthetic» that has enlightened his artistic decisions. In acclaiming this gesture, the exhibition strikingly retraces a unique career that is still as productive as ever.

En associant au médium traditionnel du vitrail, dont la lumière manifeste la présence divine, une imagerie contemporaine ancrée dans la culture américaine, Kehinde Wiley renvoie à autant de questionnements culturels et politiques sur nos modèles de société, l’identité, le genre qui font écho à l’actualité.
Né en 1977 à Los Angeles, Kehinde Wiley vit et travaille entre New York et Pékin. L’artiste a récemment été choisi par l’ancien Président Barack Obama pour peindre son portrait officiel pour la Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, à Washington DC.

As part of the AFROPOLITAN 2018 FESTIVAL, BOZAR (Brussels) welcomes five stained glass pieces by Afro-american artist Kehinde Wiley, from February 7 to May 5, 2018. By combining the traditional medium of stained glass, its light manifesting a divine presence, with contemporary images anchored in American culture, Kehinde Wiley raises a whole host of highly topical questions, both cultural and political, about our models of society, identity and gender. Born in 1977 in Los Angeles, Kehinde Wiley lives and works between New York and Beijing. Kehinde Wiley has recently been chosen by former President Barack Obama to paint his official portrait for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Washington DC. Free entrance

En mettant au gout du jour et en développant les concepts et les questions qui ont émaillé cet extraordinaire échange, l’exposition présente plus d’une centaine d’œuvres d’artistes internationaux et propose une relecture de l’histoire de l’abstraction sur les six dernières décennies.

L’Elgiz Museum présente « In Fact », nouvelle sélection de la collection. L’exposition met l’accent sur le concept de représentation et de l’acte de référence. « In Fact » comprend des œuvres sur supports mixtes et effectue une recherche sur les modèles de référence en matière de représentation.
Comment réévaluer l’acte de représentation de plus en plus compliqué dans l’ère post-factuelle à laquelle nous sommes confrontés aujourd’hui ? Au travers de la construction identitaire et de la perception de l’identité sociale ? L’oeuvre intitulée State of Being par Chiharu Shiota, qui représentait le pavillon japonais à la précédente Biennale de Venise, synthétise une réalité dont nous connaissons l’existence, mais que nous ne parvenons pas à décrire.

Elgiz Museum presents a new selection from the collection: In Fact. The exhibition focuses on the concepts of representation and the act of referring. In Fact includes works of different media and investigates the models of representation through the referred. How do we re-evaluate the increasingly impossible act of representation in the current post-truth era we face today; through constructed identities and the perception of social identity? The hollow dress titled State of Being by Chiharu Shiota, who represented the Japanese Pavillion at the previous Venice Biennale, bundles up a reality we know that exists, but is indescribable. Camerimage Film Festival and the Centre of Contemporary Art ‘Znaki Czasu’ in Toruń are pleased to present new photographs by Gregory Crewdson, in collaboration with Gagosian New York.
The work of the American photographer Gregory Crewdson has gained great acclaim from both critics and art collectors worldwide. His photographs are an embodiment of sophistication: meticulously composed and executed with great attention to detail, they easily engrave themselves in the viewer’s memory. Some of Crewdson’s earlier series had been planned months in advance and created with the help of a team of up to 40 people, which naturally evokes associations with a movie set. During his 20 years of activity as a photographer, his unmistakable style has won him global recognition. His latest project, Cathedral of the Pines, however, is his most intimate endeavour yet.
Before coming to the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń, Cathedral of the Pines was both exhibited at Gagosian in New York, where it was received with great acclaim. Toruń will be the second of two European cities to hold the exhibition, the other being London.
On Sunday, November 12, the Centre of Contemporary Art will hold a meeting with the artist.
