EN COLLABORATION AVEC LA MANUFACTURE DE SÈVRES En 2016, Jim Dine a été invité à collaborer pour une seconde fois avec la Manufacture de Sèvres. Il y a créé Thru the stardust, the heat on the lawn (Claude), un ensemble de 10 vases-sculptures en grès émaillé, à la surface couverte d’un long poème calligraphié de l’artiste, plantés d’outils. Ils seront exposés dans le jardin de Tuileries dans le cadre de la programmation hors les murs de la FIAC en octobre 2017. L’artiste américain propose une réflexion sur le pouvoir des mots, associant le langage aux outils, le grès et le bronze. Né en 1935 à Cincinnati dans l’Ohio, Jim Dine vit et travaille entre Paris (Montrouge), Göttingen (Allemagne)  et Walla Walla aux Etats-Unis.

IN COLLABORATION WITH MANUFACTURE DE SÈVRES In 2016, Jim Dine was invited for the second time by the Manufacture de Sèvres to develop a new series of works. Working in a studio loaned by the museum, Jim Dine has been creating a spectacular ensemble of ten vases/sculptures in glazed stoneware. Baked and glazed on the premises, with technical expertise and tradition of the Sèvres team, these sculptures integrate his handwritten poem as well as sculpted lids made of tools cast in bronze. They offer a reflection on the power of words – poems as vessels – creating connections between tools and language, the sensuality of clay and the harshness of the distorted bronze. They will be presented in the Tuileries garden as part of the Fiac programme Hors les murs (Fiac Outdoors). Jim Dine was born in 1935 in Cincinnati. He lives and works between Paris, Göttingen (Germany) and Walla Walla (USA).

Comment l’art est-il conservé, comment vieillit-il et se transforme-t-il ? Comment le musée conçoit-il ses relations avec les artistes, les partenaires privés et publics, et comment puise-t-il dans sa propre collection et l’enrichit-il ? Comment la collection du musée se développe-t-elle et s’agrandit-elle avec le temps ? Dans les bonnes comme dans les mauvaises périodes ? 
La nouvelle exposition temporaire se consacre à ces questions et met l’accent sur un aspect substantiel du musée dans son rôle de lieu public : il assume une responsabilité au long terme et encourage les relations et les échanges. Cinq artistes de la collection contemporaine – Monika Baer, Katharina Grosse, Svenja Kreh, Chiharu Shiota et Georg Winter – ont été priés de proposer un ou une artiste ou une œuvre d’art concrète qui puisse figurer d’interlocuteur adéquat pour leur propre travail. Dans ce processus, le Museum für Neue Kunst prend en compte la voix de l’artiste et lui accorde également du poids. Des associations, dissonances et coopérations passionnantes et originales en sont nées qui seront présentées dans l’exposition sur une période de six mois.
Ce format expérimental est l’occasion pour le musée de refléter sa collection et de réajuster les paradigmes et les perspectives qui y sont associés. En même temps, cette approche permet d’aborder les tâches du musée d’un nouveau point de vue : collectionner, conserver, explorer, exposer et transmettre.
La production de l‘art. Les auteurs de l’art. La conservation de l‘art – ces trois perspectives seront mises en lumière pendant la durée de l‘exposition. How can art endure, age, change? How can the museum design and cultivate relationships with artists, as well as with private and public partners? Indeed, how can it use and enrich the history of its own collection? How can the collection be developed and extended in future? Both in good times and in bad? A new special exhibition will address these questions, focussing in particular on one influential feature of the museum as a public site: it undertakes a responsibility over a long period, promoting discourse and fostering connections and relationships. 
Five artists from the contemporary collection – Monika Baer, Katharina Grosse, Svenja Kreh, Chiharu Shiota and Georg Winter – were asked for suggestions regarding which artist or which work they consider to a be fitting counterpart for their work. Not only does the Museum für Neue Kunst listen to these opinions, it also accords them a lot of weight. What has emerged from these consultations are a number of exciting and unusual connections, dissonances and collaborations which will be on show for a period of six months. 
This experimental format permits the museum to reflect upon its collection and readjust the paradigms and perspectives that attend it. At the same time, it represents an opportunity for a fresh approach to the museum’s duties: collecting, conserving, researching, exhibiting and educating.  Curated by Christine Litz & Elena Frickmann

L’exposition Supports/Surfaces : Les origines 1966-1970 montre la constitution, au cours des années soixante, des démarches artistiques à l’origine de l’apparition du groupe Supports/Surfaces. Comprendre ce mouvement à la fois important et éphémère nécessite de se replonger dans ces années de recherches, de confrontations et d’oppositions; quatre années ced’une formidable effervescence artistique au sein d’une période de contestations sociales et politiques puisque marquée en son milieu par mai 68. Reprendre cette histoire à son début permet de porter un regard inédit sur le mouvement en se focalisant sur ces années traversées par une véritable jubilation liée à la volonté des artistes de réinventer leur pratique.
Réunissant des œuvres majeures de cette période, certaines n’ayant pas été montrées depuis, l’exposition restitue les grands questionnements mis en jeu dans les différentes démarches : mise en crise du tableau, confrontation aux Nouveaux Réalistes et à une certaine mort de la peinture, exposition en extérieur, déploiement des œuvres dans l’espace, importance de l’objet et de sa manipulation.

The exhibition Supports/Surfaces: the Beginning, 1966–1970 shows which process took over the course of the 1960s up to the creation of the group. In order to gain an understanding of the short-lived but important Supports/Surfaces movement, one must plunge oneself into the years of research, confrontations and oppositions that led up to it. These four years were a time of intense and wonderful artistic effervescence in the midst of a period marked by the social and political upheavals of the events of May 1968. An examination of this history from its origins enables us to gain a new perspective on the movement by focusing on these years marked by the jubilation of artists in the midst of reinventing their work from the ground up. The exhibition brings together major works of this period, some which have not been shown since that time, and provides insight into the profound questioning that lay behind the creations over the course of these key years: the deconstruction of painting, confrontation with Nouveau Réalisme (“New Realism”) and the certain death of painting, external exhibition, the placement of works in space, the importance of the object and its manipulation.

Trois poids lourds de la peinture contemporaine sont réunis pour la première fois dans le cadre de l’exposition ‘‘The Men Who Fell from Earth’ au Holstebro Kunstmuseum : l’artiste danois Tal R et ses collègues allemands Jonathan Meese et Daniel Richter. Ces trois artistes se sont forgés au cours des dernières années une réputation de rénovateurs de la tradition picturale. Leur inspiration naît le plus souvent à la frontière de ce qui est considéré comme acceptable, et se traduit en images extra-ordinaires nourries d’une force expressive et de couleurs exceptionnelles. Three international heavyweights in contemporary painting will join forces when Danish Tal R and his two German colleagues and friends, Jonathan Meese and Daniel Richter, hold a joint exhibition at Holstebro Kunstmuseum, under the title ‘The Men Who Fell from Earth’. In recent decades, with an almost unrestrained energy, these three artists have made a name for themselves as significant innovators of the painting tradition. Their inspiration is often drawn from the borderline of what is generally acceptable, and the result is fabulous imagery that demonstrates great colouristic and expressive strength.
