Au printemps 2017, à l’occasion des 500 ans du Havre, plasticiens, designers, graphistes, metteurs en scène, romanciers, viendront, sur les traces de Niemeyer et de Monet, réinterpréter cette cité étonnante. Dans ce cadre, Chiharu Shiota a été invitée à investir l’Eglise Saint-Joseph de l’architecte Auguste Perret.  Un tourbillon de fils rouges, densément tissés, irradie la nef de béton de l’église. Une « accumulation d’énergie » (Accumulation of Power), qui happe, tel un trou noir, les puissances spirituelles que l’édifice concentre.   « Une église est un lieu rempli d’énergie spirituelle, perceptible même pour les personnes qui ne sont pas croyantes. Dans mon esprit, chacun conserve cette énergie au plus profond de soi. Le tourbillon en laine rouge incarne ce pouvoir spirituel des personnes passées par l’église, accumulé comme dans une tempête. » explique l’artiste Directeur artistique Un été au Havre : Jean Blaise

“In spring 2017, as Le Havre marks its 500th anniversary, visual artists, designers, graphic artists, stage directors, novelists, will follow in the wake of Niemeyer and Monet to reinterpret this surprising city. Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has been invited to invest architect Auguste Perret’s famous St Joseph Church. A whirlpool of red threads densely woven, irradiate the church concrete nave . An “Accumulation of power » which, as a black hole, grasps the spiritual powers concentrated in the buildings.  “A church is a place also for spiritual energy even for people who are not religious. In my mind, every person in life has his/her own place of power. The red whirlpool construction embodies an accumulation of spiritual power. In this construction, all ideas, thoughts and prayers of people having been in the church are accumulated, like in a storm » the artist explains. Le FRAC Auvergne consacre une exposition au photographe américain Gregory Crewdson, du 20 mai au 17 septembre 2017. Il s’agit de la première exposition de cet artiste majeur, internationalement acclamé, dans une institution française. Elle s’accompagne de la publication du livre ‘The Becket Pictures’ . L’exposition réunira les séries Fireflies (1996) et Cathedral of the Pines (2013-2014), toutes deux conçues dans la ville de Becket (Massachusets) où l’artiste passa une partie de son enfance. Elle présentera également un ensemble d’oeuvres issues de la série Beneath the Roses (2003-2008). Commissaires / curators : Giacinto di Pietrantonio, Katerina Koskina , Dimitri Ozerkov

The FRAC Auvergne devotes an exhibition to the American photographer Gregory Crewdson,  20 May – 17 September 2017. It is the first exhibition of this major artist, internationally acclaimed, in a French institution. It is accompanied by the publication of the book ‘The Becket Pictures’. This exhibition will gather the Fireflies (1996) and Cathedral of the Pines (2013-2014) series, both made in the town of Becket, Massachusetts, where the artist spent a part of his childhood. It will also show a collection of works from the series Beneath the Roses (2003-2008).

The Galleria Nazionale invites ”la Caixa” Collection of Contemporary Art to establish a “conversation”, presenting a select group of works under the roof of its classical architecture. This exhibition brings together a dozen works by artists with different poetic voices. The interaction between the works follows a pattern, that established by the basso continuo of the minimalist aesthetic and by the triple relation between architecture, sculpture and the human figure. Axée sur la notion fondamentale de métamorphose, cette exposition retrace le travail de Jan Fabre depuis ses débuts autour d’une réflexion spirituelle, philosophique et politique sur la question de la vie et de la mort.  Fasciné par l’alchimie et la mémoire des matériaux, Jan Fabre utilise le verre et l’os depuis 1977, autant en référence aux maîtres flamands qu’à celle de la tradition verrière de Venise.

Fascinated by alchemy and memory of materials, Jan Fabre has been using glass and bone since 1977, both in reference to the Flemish masters and the Venice glass tradition.

La première de « MONDPARSIFAL ALPHA 1-8 (ERZMUTTERZ DER ABWEHRZ) », mise en scène spatiale d’un opéra de Berhard Lang par Jonathan Meese, d’après le « Parsifal » (1982) de Richard Wagner, aura lieu à l’occasion des Wiener Festwochen (Festival de Théâtre et Opéra). De nouvelles œuvres de l’artiste font irruption dans la galerie de peinture du musée tel un vaisseau spatial. Quatre lieux situés au sud des Alpes abritant des écoles de peinture deviennent des lieux d’interaction où, comme dans « MONDPARSIFAL », Meese explore l’importance de l’art pour le futur, interrogeant la peinture des maîtres anciens. L’artiste leur répond à l’aide de ses propres peintures et d’une tête de Janus « CHEF DER KUNST » (le patron de l’art).

»MONDPARSIFAL ALPHA 1-8 (ERZMUTTERZ DER ABWEHRZ)« is the title that Jonathan Meese gave to his outer-space production of an opera by Bernhard Lang, which will premiere at the 2017 Wiener Festwochen festival. As the title suggests, this is a reinterpretation of the subject matter of Richard Wagner’s last opera »Parsifal« (1882). In the Picture Gallery, he now lands a new group of works, flying in like a spaceship. Four places south of the Alps that were home to schools of painters become associative theatrical venues, in which Meese, like in »MONDPARSIFAL,« explores the significance of art for the future, interrogating the Old Masters. At the same time, he responds to them with his own pictures and a Janusface, »CHEF DER KUNST« (the boss of art).

JARDINS DU MUSEE, MUSEE VAN BUUREN, BRUXELLES, BELGIQUEDu 10/05/2017 au 8/10/2017

Le Musée van Buuren, en collaboration avec la Fondation Caro et la Galerie Daniel Templon, a choisi d’exposer dans ses jardins, un grand nom de la sculpture anglaise et de la scène internationale : Anthony Caro (1924-2013). Les sculptures de l’artiste investiront ce cadre exceptionnel durant le printemps et l’été 2017.
La sculpture moderne et contemporaine s’inscrit dans la continuité des siècles précédents, avec une différence pourtant significative : elle acquiert son autonomie, elle ne répond plus à une fonction précise. L’artiste d’aujourd’hui s’exprime en toute liberté. Anthony Caro illustre magnifiquement cette tendance, lui qui  cherchait à libérer la sculpture de ses attaches,  qui aimait la confrontation directe de l’œuvre et du spectateur. Il considérait la sculpture comme un art ouvert sur l’espace.
Dans le parc, les visiteurs auront  l’occasion de se perdre dans les allées du labyrinthe, de se laisser aller à la méditation dans  le jardin du cœur, tous deux créés  par René Pechère. Ils pourront également se promener dans le merveilleux jardin pittoresque et  les roseraies dessinés par Jules Buyssens, récemment restaurés.
En écho à son exposition dans les jardins du Musée Van Buuren, la Galerie Templon présentera à Bruxelles, du 1er juin au 22 juillet, ‘Table Pieces and Late Sculptures’, un ensemble inédit en Belgique de sculptures d’intérieur de Sir Anthony Caro.

ANTHONY CARO – SOLO EXHIBITION

GARDENS OF THE MUSEUM, MUSEE VAN BUUREN, BRUSSELS, BELGIUMFrom 5/10/2017 to 10/8/2017

The van Buuren Museum, in collaboration with the Caro Foundation and the Daniel Templon Gallery, has decided to exhibit the work of a major name, not only in English sculpture, but also on the international stage: Anthony Caro (1924-2013). The artist’s sculptures will grace this stunning setting during the spring and summer of 2017.
Even though modern and contemporary sculpture follows in the footsteps of the previous centuries, there is one significant difference: it has become autonomous and no longer fulfils a specific function. Modern-day artists express themselves in all freedom. Anthony Caro, much acclaimed for his innovative approach of removing the sculpture from its plinth and encouraging direct interaction between viewers and the work, exemplifies this trend magnificently. He saw sculpture as a form of art that opens up onto space.
Visitors will have an opportunity to lose the world in the paths of the park’s Labyrinth, to peacefully meditate in the Jardin du Cœur, both designed by René Pechère, and to explore the marvellously picturesque garden or stroll through the recently restored rose gardens Jules Buyssens originally created.
Galerie Templon will be presenting ‘Table Pieces and Late Sculptures’, an original collection of indoor sculptures by Sir Anthony Caro in Brussels from June 1 to July 22, echoing the exhibition of his works in the gardens of the Musée Van Buuren.

C’est une exposition bien singulière qui sera présentée cet été au château de Hauterives /Drôme. Singulière à double titre. Pour la première fois, Gérard Garouste figure emblématique de la peinture française et son épouse, Elizabeth Garouste, designer, exposent ensemble. Pour la première fois, c’est leur passion commune pour l’art brut qui les réunit, là même où le facteur Cheval a érigé son célèbre Palais idéal, devenu référence mondiale de l’art brut.
Tout naturellement, les créations extravagantes de David Rochline, frère d’Elizabeth décédé fin 2015, ont trouvé leur place dans cette belle aventure familiale, tout comme celles des enfants de l’association La Source, désormais au coeur de leurs préoccupations artistiques et citoyennes.

This is a very singular exhibition which will be presented this summer at the Hauterives Palace / Drôme. Singular in two ways. For the first time, Gérard Garouste – emblematic figure of French painting – and his wife, Elizabeth Garouste – designer – exhibit together. For the first time, this is their shared passion for « art brut » (outsider art) that get them together, right here where Facteur Cheval erected his famous Ideal Palace, considered as the international reference of « art brut ». Quite naturally, the extravagant creations of David Rochline – Elizabeth’s brother, deceased in 2015, found their place in this exciting family venture, like the ones of children from La Source association, henceforth at the heart of their artistic and civic concerns.

De tout temps, voyager et explorer le monde a permis à l’Homme d’aller à la rencontre d’une diversité de peuples, de lieux et de cultures, mais aussi de collecter des artefacts et de les transposer dans d’autres contextes. Les collections ainsi formées, qu’il s’agisse de collections privées et profanes, des Expositions Universelles, ou des jardins botaniques et zoologiques d’aujourd’hui, ont été utilisées pour divertir et éduquer. Ces collections façonnent notre vision du monde ; en collectionnant, documentant et reproduisant, nous espérons ainsi comprendre le monde dans sa diversité. Le commissaire d’exposition Kaiwan Mehta a invité Jitish Kallat, Sonia Mehra Chawia, Sahej Rahal, Shelagh Keeley et l’auteur Ruth Padel à aborder ce « World in the City» [Monde dans la ville]. Ces artistes explorent les histoires et les pratiques du divertissement et de la production de connaissances, ainsi que de la documentation artistique et de la reproduction dans le contexte des jardins botaniques et zoologiques.

Traveling and exploring the world has always enabled us to meet different peoples, to encounter different cultures and spaces, and to collect artefacts and take them into other contexts. These collections have been used to entertain and to educate, whether in private and feudal collections, the World’s fair, or today’s zoological and botanic gardens. They shape the ways in which we see the world. By collecting, documenting and reproducing we hope to understand the world and its manifold forms of life and diverse cultures. Curator Kaiwan Mehta has invited JitishKallat,SoniaMehraChawla, SahejRahal, ShelaghKeeley and author RuthPadel to address this ‘world in the city’. They explore the stories and the practices of entertainment and knowledge production, and of artistic documentation and reproduction in the context of zoological and botanical gardens.

Pour sa quatrième Carte blanche confiée à un artiste contemporain, le MNAAG a choisi de sortir du cadre strict de la rotonde (4e étage) et d’exposer les sculptures de l’artiste plasticienne Prune Nourry dans un dialogue poétique avec les collections ; y prennent part quinze pièces historiques de la collection permanente du musée. Les oeuvres de Prune Nourry, présentées au sein d’un parcours guidé, offrent analogies visuelles et correspondances de sens, invitant le visiteur à participer à une véritable réflexion à travers le musée sur des problématiques quant le devenir de l’humanité. Nées d’un triptyque d’expériences asiatiques, ses créations – performances, sculptures, installations – illustrent dix ans de travail de l’artiste. L’itinéraire culmine sous le regard d’une création monumentale, un Bouddha fragmenté, ruiné, qui investit tous les étages du musée.

HOLY, CARTE BLANCHE à PRUNE NOURRY – SOLO SHOW

For its fourth Carte Blanche assigned to a contemporary artist, the MNAAG chose to go beyond the close environment of the Rotunda (4th floor) and show the visual artist Prune Nourry’s sculptures in a poetic dialogue with the collections. Fifteen historic pieces of the museum’s permanent collection share in it. Presented in a tour outlined in the folder, Prune Nourry’s worksoffer visual analogies and semantic correspondences, invitingthe visitor to participate throughout the museum in anauthentic reflection on the future of mankind. Arisen from atriptych of experiences in Asia, her creations – performances, sculptures, installations – illustrate ten years of the artist’s work. The tour culminates under the gaze of a monumentalcreation, a fragmented Buddha, in ruins, that takes over every floor of the museum.
