“Paint, She Said”, celebrates the current buoyant state of painting and particularly of painting by women artists living in France. Grouped under this title (reminiscent of Marguerite Duras’ film and book “Destroy She Said”) are a selection of established or up-and-coming artists who have clearly placed themselves in a painterly tradition and contribute to its continuing renewal. Le 9 mars 2017, l’Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez, haut lieu des arts et de la culture à Bordeaux,organise, au sein du Château Labottière, une grande exposition hommage à Daniel Templon. Avec près de 600 expositions et 250 artistes, Daniel Templon, galeriste français à la réputation mondiale, a toujours su donner la part belle aux avant-gardes artistiques. L’exposition est construite comme un portrait de Daniel Templon, pionner et figure majeure du monde de l’art, à travers cinq artistes phares de sa galerie, d’univers et d’horizons différents : Philippe Cognée, Jan Fabre, Pierre et Gilles, Yue Minjun et Chiharu Shiota.

On the 9th of March 2017, the Cultural Institute Bernard Magrez, leading centre for arts and culture in Bordeaux, pays tribute to Daniel Templon through an important exhibition organised at the Château Labottière. With over 600 exhibitions and 250 artists, the world-renowned French galerist, always knew to pay particular attention to the artistic avant-garde. The exhibition, portrays Daniel Templon, pioneer and major figure of the art world, featuring five major artists of his gallery, offering different artistic styles: Philippe Cognée, Jan Fabre, Pierre et Gilles, Yue Minjun and Chiharu Shiota.

Avec 136 œuvres provenant de 28 institutions et prêteurs privés, cette exposition au MAHJ explore le riche devenir de la figure du Golem dans les arts visuels, à travers un parcours mêlant peinture, dessin, photographie, théâtre, cinéma, littérature, bande dessinée et jeu vidéo. De la présentation d’un remarquable Sefer Yetsirah (« Livre de la Création ») imprimé à Mantoue en 1612 à la projection d’extraits de Terminator 2, en passant par des œuvres de Boris Aronson, Christian Boltanski, Gérard Garouste, Antony Gormley, Philip Guston, Amos Gitaï, R.B. Kitaj ou Anselm Kiefer, l’exposition montre comment cette légende juive médiévale opère encore aujourd’hui dans un imaginaire mondialisé.

With 136 works from 28 institutions and private lender, this exhibiton at the MAHJ explores the rich future of the Golem’s figure in the visual arts, through a journey mixing painting, drawing, photography, theatre, cinema, literature, comic and video games. From the presentation of a remarkable Sefer Yetsirah (“Book of Creation”) printed in Mantua in 1612 to the movie clip from Terminator 2, through works of Boris Aronson, Christian Boltanski, Gérard Garouste, Antony Gormley, Philip Guston, Amos Gitaï, R.B. Kitaj or Anselm Kiefer, the exhibition reveals how this medieval Jewish legend still effects today in a globalized imaginary world.

Le CIAC (Centre Interprétation Art et Culture) de Bourbourg en étroite collaboration avec Barford Sculptures Ltd de Londres, propose un parcours de découverte des oeuvres du sculpteur anglais Sir Anthony Caro et de l’artiste peintre anglaise Sheila Girling, épouse de l’artiste, dans divers lieux du Nord de la France Des pièces remarquables de ces deux artistes seront ainsi présentées au Musée des Augustins d’Hazebrouck et au musée Benoît De Puydt de Bailleul en regard des collections de ces deux lieux. Une exposition leur sera dédiée dans les différents espaces du CIAC accueil, salle du rez-de chaussée et salle du 1er étage) et des oeuvres entreront en dialogue avec le Choeur de lumière réalisée par Anthony Caro en 2008, dans l’église Saint Jean-Baptiste de Bourbourg.

CIAC (Interpretation Center Art and Culture) Bourbourg closely with Barford Sculptures Ltd. of London, offers a principle route to discover the works of British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro and the English painter Sheila Girling, also the wife of the artist in various places in the North of France.
Remarkable pieces of these two artists will be presented at the Augustins Museum of Hazebrouck and the Musée Benoît de Puydt in Bailleul within the museums collections. An exhibition will be dedicated to both Sir Caro and Sheila Girling in the different spaces of the CIAC Art center in Bourbourg – where some can resonate with the light Choir created by Anthony Caro in 2008, in the Saint John the Baptist church in the city.

De la Figuration Narrative à la violence graphique de Bazooka, des éditions Champ Libre à la création des radios libres, de Hara-Kiri à Bérurier Noir, cette exposition rend compte d’un « esprit français » critique, irrévérencieux et contestataire, en proposant une multitude de filiations et d’affinités. À travers une soixantaine d’artistes et plus de 700 oeuvres et documents, rassemblant à la fois journaux, tracts, affiches, extraits de films, de vidéos et d’émissions de télévision, l’exposition assume une forme de révision esthétique, en allant regarder vers d’autres “genres” de la création que ceux généralement mis en avant dans l’art contemporain.

From Narrative Figuration to the hardcore graphics of Bazooka, from Les Editions Champ Libre to the first «radios libres» (a form of pirate radio), from Hara-Kiri to Bérurier Noir, the exhibition looks at the formation of a critical, irreverent, dissenting «French spirit» by proposing a multitude of crossovers and affinities. Through some sixty artists and over seven hundred works and documents, spanning newspapers, flyers, posters, and extracts from films, videos and television shows, it purposely looks to other creative «genres» than those generally in the spotlight of contemporary art.

Already 40 years: It was in 1976 when the photographer Pierre Commoy met Gilles Blanchard, a painter from Beaux-Art in Paris, and when they start their four-handed oeuvre on the boarders between painting and photography. Under the name of Pierre and Gilles, art cannot be dissociated from personal issues or intimacy. In order to celebrate this anniversary, the artistes chose to publish a book presenting year by year like in an album. Published in October by Flammarion, the book offers 350 illustrations, including never published photographs and a sophisticated text by Éric Troncy. Le Carré Sainte-Anne à Montpellier présente du 15 février au 30 avril 2017 une exposition de l’artiste berlinois Jonathan Meese, “Dr. Merlin de Large, Marquis Zed de Baby-excalibur”. Mêlant références historiques, légendaires et de science-fiction, Jonathan Meese confronte depuis une quinzaine d’années différents personnages à divers modes d’expression comme le cinéma, l’opéra, la vidéo ou encore la performance. Ses tableaux aux formes et couleurs expressionnistes révèlent des coups de pinceaux francs et des écritures spontanées sur fond noir, complétés d’objets fixés à la glue. Il élabore ses installations à partir de divers éléments qu’il accumule. L’exposition fait référence à l’œuvre mythique de la légende Arthurienne, ainsi qu’à celles de Stanley Kubrik, de John Boorman et du Marquis de Sade. Elle sera composée d’une série de peintures sur toile et d’œuvres éphémères réalisées directement sur les cimaises de l’ancienne église.

From February 15 to April 30, 2017, the Carré Sainte-Anne in Montpellier presents “Dr. Merlin de Large, Marquis Zed de Baby-excalibur”, an exhibition by the Berlin artist Jonathan Meese. Blending references to history, legends and science fiction, for the last fifteen years, Jonathan Meese has been juxtaposing different personalities from various modes of expression such as film, opera, video or live performances. The expressionist forms and colours of his paintings are characterised by bold brush strokes and spontaneous scripts on a black background, completed with objects that are glued on. The artist develops his installations out of various items that he has collected. The exhibition refers to the mythical legends of Arthur, as well as to the works of Stanley Kubrik, John Boorman and the Marquis de Sade. It consists of a series of paintings on canvas and ephemeral works created directly on the mouldings of the former church.

The Afropolitan Festival is three days of exceptional programming dedicated to Afropolitan art, creativity and state of mind, presented by BOZAR and its partners, with honorary guest artists Fredy Massamba, the great voice of Afro-soul, and Tatiana Silva, television presenter. Some thirty multidisciplinary events with over 70 artists and cultural players from Belgium, the two Congos, Ghana and Europe are articulated around three themes: the Belgian Congolese diaspora, Afropolitans of Europe, and bridges between Sub-Saharans and North Africans. The majority of the events are free.

L’exposition personnelle Here After Here de Jitish Kallat, ouvrira ses portes le 15 janvier 2017 à la National Gallery of Modern Art à New Delhi.
Organisée par Catherine David, commissaire d’exposition internationalement reconnue, Here After Here présente l’œuvre de Kallat dans toute sa diversité, créant un ensemble mêlant peinture, photographie, dessin, vidéo et installations sculpturales, de 1992 à aujourd’hui. L’exposition est répartie entre deux bâtiments du NGMA – la Jaipur House, ancienne résidence richement ornée du Maharaja de Jaipur conçue en 1936, et la nouvelle aile du musée construite en 2009.
Here After Hereest l’exposition la plus importante et complète de l’œuvre de Kallat à ce jour. En l’honneur de cet événement, une monographie spécialement publiée par la National Gallery of Modern Art servira également d’anthologie des essais portant sur l’œuvre de Kallat.

A major solo exhibition of works by Jitish Kallat titled Here After Here, curated by internationally renowned curator Catherine David will open at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi on 15 January 2017.
Here After Here brings together Jitish Kallat’s vast œuvre spanning painting, photography, drawing, video and sculptural installations with some works dating back as far as 1992. The exhibition is spread across two buildings of the NGMA – the ornate Jaipur House, originally built as the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1936, and the museum’s new wing constructed in 2009.
Here After Here is the largest and most wide-ranging exhibition of Kallat’s work to date. To commemorate this significant juncture, a specially commissioned monograph published by the National Gallery of Modern Art will also serve as an anthology of essays on Kallat’s works.
