The Afropolitan Festival is three days of exceptional programming dedicated to Afropolitan art, creativity and state of mind, presented by BOZAR and its partners, with honorary guest artists Fredy Massamba, the great voice of Afro-soul, and Tatiana Silva, television presenter. Some thirty multidisciplinary events with over 70 artists and cultural players from Belgium, the two Congos, Ghana and Europe are articulated around three themes: the Belgian Congolese diaspora, Afropolitans of Europe, and bridges between Sub-Saharans and North Africans. The majority of the events are free.

THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, NEW DELHI, INDE Du 15/01/2017 au 14/03/2017

L’exposition personnelle Here After Here de Jitish Kallat, ouvrira ses portes le 15 janvier 2017 à la National Gallery of Modern Art à New Delhi.
Organisée par Catherine David, commissaire d’exposition internationalement reconnue, Here After Here présente l’œuvre de Kallat dans toute sa diversité, créant un ensemble mêlant peinture, photographie, dessin, vidéo et installations sculpturales, de 1992 à aujourd’hui. L’exposition est répartie entre deux bâtiments du NGMA – la Jaipur House, ancienne résidence richement ornée du Maharaja de Jaipur conçue en 1936, et la nouvelle aile du musée construite en 2009.
Here After Hereest l’exposition la plus importante et complète de l’œuvre de Kallat à ce jour. En l’honneur de cet événement, une monographie spécialement publiée par la National Gallery of Modern Art servira également d’anthologie des essais portant sur l’œuvre de Kallat.

HERE AFTER HERE – SOLO SHOW

THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, NEW DELHI, INDIAFrom 1/15/2017 to 3/14/2017

A major solo exhibition of works by Jitish Kallat titled Here After Here, curated by internationally renowned curator Catherine David will open at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi on 15 January 2017.
Here After Here brings together Jitish Kallat’s vast œuvre spanning painting, photography, drawing, video and sculptural installations with some works dating back as far as 1992. The exhibition is spread across two buildings of the NGMA – the ornate Jaipur House, originally built as the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1936, and the museum’s new wing constructed in 2009.
Here After Here is the largest and most wide-ranging exhibition of Kallat’s work to date. To commemorate this significant juncture, a specially commissioned monograph published by the National Gallery of Modern Art will also serve as an anthology of essays on Kallat’s works.

Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche a l’honneur de recevoir Chiharu Shiota pour une exposition monumentale au coeur du magasin. Célèbre pour ses spectaculaires installations de fils tissés et la puissance d’évocation de ses oeuvres, l’artiste s’est engagée dans cette carte blanche avec l’intensité qu’on lui connaît. “Where are we going?” est une invitation à l’émerveillement mais aussi au questionnement, indissociable de l’oeuvre de Chiharu Shiota. Pour cette nouvelle installation, l’artiste établit une analogie entre la vie humaine et le voyage : chaque individu embarque pour une destination inconnue, traversant un océan d’expériences, d’émotions, de rencontres et de souvenirs. Sur une proposition du Bon Marché Rive Gauche, Chiharu Shiota emploie pour la première fois un fil de couleur blanche pour une installation. L’artiste évoque la pureté d’un nouveau départ, sans préciser d’itinéraire : « La vie est un voyage sans destination ».

Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is honoured to be welcoming Chiharu Shiota and her outstanding exhibition in the heart of the department store. Famed for her vast in situ installations in wool thread and the evocative impact of her works, the artist has exploited her carte blanche with the intensity you would expect. “Where are we going?” invites us to be amazed, but also to question an intrinsic element of Chiharu Shiota’s work. In this new installation, Chiharu Shiota establishes an analogy between human life and travel : people set off for an unknown destination, crossing an ocean of experiences, emotions, encounters and memories. At the suggestion of le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, Chiharu Shiota has used white-coloured yarn for the very first time in an installation. The artist evokes the purity of a fresh start, while keeping the itineraries open: “Life is a voyage with no destination”.

ETOILE CINEMAS ou CINEMAS INDEPENDANTS, PARIS, FRANCEà partir du 30 septembre 2016

Initié par l’artiste Stephan Breuer et Lea Marchetti, en collaboration avec Charles de Meaux, One Minute in Art (OMIA) est une nouvelle expérience consistant à diffuser une minute d’art vidéo avant chaque film dans les salles du groupe Etoile Cinemas, ainsi que dans d’autres cinémas indépendants parisiens.
La nouvelle édition a été lancée le 30 Septembre au cinéma Etoile Saint Germain avec une sélection d’artistes français et internationaux, dont Brice Dellsperger, Anthony McCall, François Curlet, Julião Sarmento ou encore Jitish Kallat.
OMIA a pour volonté de sortir l’art vidéo du cadre des musées et des galeries, et ainsi de pénétrer l’espace public, en offrant cette expérience immatérielle de l’art aux spectateurs.  Chaque oeuvre est diffusée pour une durée de deux semaines, puis voyage dans les autres salles de cinémas, offrant ainsi 10 semaines d’exposition pour chaque artiste dans tout Paris.

ONE MINUTE IN ART

ETOILE CINEMAS or INDEPENDENT MOVIE THEATERS, PARIS, FRANCEstarting Septmeber 30, 2016 

Initiated by conceptual artists Stephan Breuer and Charles de Meaux, along with Lea Marchetti, One Minute In Art (OMIA) introduces in the Etoile Cinémas’ movie theaters One Minute of Video Art before each movie, made and/or directed by a contemporary artist.
The new edition was launched on September 30 in the Cinema Etoile Saint Germain with a selection of French and international artists like Brice Dellsperger, Anthony McCall, François Curlet, Julião Sarmento or Jitish Kallat.
The OMIA program aims to pull video art out of the museums and galleries and penetrate the public space, freely offering this ‘minute’ to the audience. Each work starts its voyage in the movie theater Etoile Saint Germain for two weeks and will travels to the other movie theaters, thus offering 6 weeks of exhibition all over Paris.

L’exposition fait dialoguer « Carceri d’invenzione », une série d’estampes réalisée vers 1761 par Giovanni Battista Piranesi, avec l’installation  Stairway de l’artiste Chiharu Shiota de 2012. Stairway crée un réseau de fils noirs entremêlés entourant un escalier. L’enchevêtrement de fils de Shiota produit une trame qui évoque la gravure et les espaces de fantaisies architecturales créés par Piranesi. Les prisons culturelles de passion ainsi que de cauchemars, existant dans l’imagination de ces deux artistes, emprisonnent rêves et souvenirs.   Commissaire d’exposition : Emanuela Calò

The exhibition juxtaposes Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s series of prints “Carceri d’invenzione,” from ca. 1761, with Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota’s 2012 installation Stairway: a web of black threads featuring a staircase. Shiota’s heaped yarns create hatches and spaces reminiscent of etching and of Piranesi’s architectural fantasy spaces. The culture-dependent prisons of passion and nightmares exist in the artists’ imagination and incarcerate dreams and memories.

Pierre et Gilles (nés respectivement en 1950 à la Roche-sur-Yon et en 1953 au Havre) réenchantent le monde par leurs héros superbes arrachés à la mythologie, à la Bible, aux contes de fée. Ils incarnent depuis les années 1980 un art du portrait sophistiqué, entre photographie et peinture, insufflant une touche d’humanité aux célébrités ou magnifiant les gens ordinaires. Nourries d’art, de cinéma et d’une passion pour toute forme de culture populaire, les images peintes de Pierre et Gilles sont une tentative de réconciliation des âges, des genres et des styles, et font l’apologie d’une humanité fragile, où chacun serait un être d’exception. Résolument inscrites dans le monde contemporain, elles font aussi résonner les questions politiques à travers des mises en scènes parfaitement orchestrées, qui ravivent notre sens critique. Pierre and Gilles (born in 1950 in La Roche-sur-Yon and in 1953 in Le Havre) are once again delighting the world with their superb heroes from mythology, the Bible, or fairy tales. Since 1980 the artist couple is standing for a sophisticated portrait art, situated between photography and painting, and breathing a touch of humanity into celebrities or magnificence into ordinary people. Inspired by the fine arts, cinema, and any kind of pop culture, the works by Pierre and Gilles are an attempt to reconcile different ages, genders and styles. Furthermore, they are justification for a fragile humanity where everyone may be an exceptional being. Nouvelle tendance en photo : l’exposition Bling Bling Baby présente le nouvel univers coloré de la photographie. Du glamour au lyrisme, de la représentation ironique aux portraits pop ; ces dernières années ont vu l’émergence d’un canon esthétique fascinant qui célèbre le superficiel et le kitsch. David LaChapelle et Pierre et Gilles représentent brillamment ce flirt avec la culture pop. Cette exposition de groupe placée sous le commisariat  de Nadine Barth, réunit des artistes internationaux et mêle les approches les plus pertinentes du champ de la photographie. Elle propose des artistes émergents et confirmés, et nous entraîne dans un tourbillon surréel, scintillant et incroyablement inspirant.

New trends in photography: the exhibition “Bling Bling Baby” will present the new, colourful world of photography. From Glam Fashion to nature poems, from the ironic representation to pop portraits – the past few years have seen the emergence of a fascinating canon of images  which celebrate the artificial and do not shy away from kitsch. David LaChapelle and Pierre et Gilles successfully continued this flirt with pop. The international group exhibition, curated by Nadine Barth, combines the most interesting new approaches from the field of photography, it introduces new and familiar names and carries us off to a sweet, surreal, glittering and incredibly fresh cosmos.

L’artiste belge Jan Fabre investit les espaces du musée St Petersbourg avec une exposition exceptionnelle réunissant ses œuvres anciennes et des réalisations inédites, produites spécialement pour l’occasion.
Les dessins, sculptures et installations de Jan Fabre s’intègrent dans les espaces historiques des salles du Vieil Ermitage, de la salle d’Apollon, du jardin d’hiver de Catherine La Grande, dans les salles consacrées à la peinture flamande (Nouvel Ermitage), dans le Halle aux 12 colonnes et de la salle des Chevaliers, en un grand circuit qui se poursuit dans les salles récemment installées dans l’ancien ministère des affaires étrangères des tsars de Russie, et se clôt avec le film performance ‘Love is the Power Supreme’ (2016). KNIGHT OF DESPAIR/WARRIOR OF BEAUTY – SOLO SHOW

HERMITAGE MUSEUM, ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIAFrom 10/21/2016 to 4/9/2017 

Belgian artist Jan Fabre has been invited by the St Petersbourg Hermitage to create an extensive exhibition circuit at the museum, to include both new and existing works.
This outstanding new presentation at the State Hermitage commences in the Apollo Room. Fabre will also be integrating his drawings, sculptures and installations into the rooms of the Old Hermitage (with its collection of Southern Netherlands Renaissance painting), Catherine the Great’s Winter Garden, the Flemish rooms in the New Hermitage (Snyders Room, Van Dyck Room, Rubens Room, Jordaens Room), the Twelve-Column Hall and the Knights’ Room. The exhibition continues on the other side of the museum square in the recently installed rooms of the General Staff Building, once the Russian tsars’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The final part of the exhibition is the performance film ‘Love is the Power Supreme’ (2016) which will be made in St Petersburg. Curator Dr. Dimitri Ozerkov

Le Petit Palais présente la première exposition personnelle en France de l’artiste afro-américain Kehinde Wiley. À cette occasion, le public découvrira sa dernière série, Lamentation. Inspiré par la grande peinture religieuse, l’artiste présentera des vitraux et des tableaux monumentaux au cœur des collections permanentes du musée. S’inspirant des maîtres de la peinture classique tels que Titien, Van Dyck ou encore Ingres et David, Kehinde Wiley réalise des portraits saturés de couleurs et d’ornementations de jeunes noirs ou métisses. L’artiste créé ainsi des collisions entre l’histoire de l’art et la culture populaire.

The Museum Petit Palais presents the first solo show of afro-American artist Kehinde Wiley in France. This will be the occasion to discover his latest series, Lamentation. Inspired by religious paintings, the artist presents stained-glass windows and monumental paintings in the middle of the permanent collection of the museum. The artist finds inspiration in the classical paintings of masters like Titian, Van Dyck, Ingres or David for his with color and ornamentations filled paintings of young black or mixed-race persons. The artist establishes collisions between art history and popular culture.
