A l’occasion de l’exposition ‘Cathedral of the Pines’ présentée conjointement à la Galerie Templon Paris et Bruxelles, le photographe américain Gregory Crewdson présentera au public français sa dernière série dans une conversation animée par l’historien de la photographie et commissaire d’exposition Michel Poivert. Depuis plus de vingt ans, Gregory Crewdson a fait des rues et des foyers de l’Amérique des petites villes le décor de narrations inquiétantes, de l’étrangeté qui sourd sous la façade du rêve américain. A l’instar d’un réalisateur de cinéma, l’artiste planifie méticuleusement ses mises en scène et travaille avec une équipe complète de tournage. Reprenant les codes du cinéma fantastique, du drame psychologique, du suspense, il se place dans le sillage de Diane Arbus, Alfred Hitchcok ou Edward Hopper. Les nouvelles oeuvres de Gregory Crewdson ont pour décor la commune rurale de Becket dans le Massachussetts. Dans ces images qui rappellent la tradition picturale du 19ème siècle, Crewdson joue sur les tensions entre art et réalité, séparation et relation, intimité et isolement.

On the occasion of the two concurrently exhibitions « Cathedral of the Pines » at Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris and Brussels, the American artist Gregory Crewdson is presenting his most recent body of work in a talk with Michel Poivert, art historian specialized in photography. In images that recall nineteenth-century painting, Crewdson captures motionless figures in both natural environments and domestic interiors, charged with ambiguity. Ever since his nocturnal Twilight series (1998–2002), Crewdson has worked with a full crew, planning his elaborately staged images in a process similar to that of a movie director. His use of the codes governing the cinema of fantasy films, psychological drama and suspense conjures forebears such as Diane Arbus, Alfred Hitchcock and Edward Hopper. These new works were shot on location in Becket, Massachusetts, where Crewdson retreated, in search of inspiration. ‘It was deep in the forests of Becket, Massachusetts that I finally felt darkness lift, experienced a reconnection with my artistic process, and moved into a period of renewal and intense creative productivity,’ he explains.

Le Springs Center met en lumière le travail de l’artiste international Francesco Clemente à travers son exposition personnelle “Nomadic Life”. Clemente est l’un des chefs de file de la Trans-avant-garde. Pour l’occasion, il a peint durant un mois une grande fresque murale intitulée “The Tide of the Ocean of Stories” au coeur de l’espace d’exposition. Ses peintures sur le mur sont la lie visuelle qui représente les tons très profonds de deux civilisations antiques, l’Inde et la Chine. Sa compréhension de la vie nomade est de penser globalement et d’agir localement. Le commissaire d’exposition Huang Du a réunit esemble les chefs d’oeuvres de Clemente : peintures, fresques, oeuvres sur papier, avec son matériel artistique et de précieux photographies et documentaires.

The Springs Center highlights with the solo exhibition « Nomadic Life » the work of the internationally known artist Francesco Clemente. Clemente is considered one of the most representative artists of the Transavantgarde. For this exhibition, he has spent one month to paint a large mural in the exhibition space, “The Tide of the Ocean of Stories”. His paintings on the wall are visual sediments that embody the deep and profound cultural tones of the two ancient civilizations – India and China. His understanding of the nomadic life is thinking globally and acting locally. The exhibition’s curator Huang Du brings together large–scale artworks, paintings, murals, works on paper as well as Clemente’s equipment, valuable photographs and documentary films.

David LaChapelle expose six toiles de grand format de sa série Gas Stations. Inspiré par la peinture Gas d’Edward Hopper (1940), LaChapelle, en a créé des modèles réduits en utilisant des objets du quotidien, trouvés , qu’il a ensuite photographié dans la forêt tropicale de Maui. Le paysage naturel de la forêt tropicale enveloppe les structures fabriquées des stations-service, agissant à la fois comme une force génératrice et destructrice. Son travail est une réflexion sur notre dépendance aux combustibles fossiles et « l’absurdité de nos tentatives d’exploiter la nature.”

Renowned photographer David LaChapelle will exhibit six large-scale photographs from his Gas Stations series. Inspired in part by Edward Hopper’s painting Gas (1940), LaChapelle created scale models using common, found objects, which he then photographed on location in the rainforest of Maui. The natural landscape of the rainforest envelops the fabricated structures of the gas stations, acting at once as a generative force and a destructive one. The work is a commentary on our reliance on fossil fuels and “the absurdity of our attempts to harness nature.”

Réalisés avant 1964, ces travaux se caractérisent par la confrontation dynamique d’une abstraction expressive et d’une figuration stylisée.

Created before 1964, these works stand out for the particularly dynamic interplay between expressive abstraction and stylized figuration.

L’œuvre «Love like Blood (dein Junker Meese “Babyface”) » de Jonathan Meese participe à l’exposition proposant un parcours où dialoguent, depuis l’impressionismes les scènes allemande et français. D’Auguste Renoir à Max Liebermann, d’André Derain à Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, en passant par Max Ernst, Aurélie Nemours et Hans Hartung, l’exposition raconte plus de cent ans d’une histoire partagée qui se poursuit au présent. La réception artistique mutuelle témoigne ainsi tout autant des influences croisées et de la fascination pour le voisin que des interrogations face à lui.

The work «Love like Blood (dein Junker Meese “Babyface”) » by Jonathan Meese can be seen in this exhibition offering a dialogue between the German and the French art scene since impressionism. Pictures by Auguste Renoir stand alongside Max Libermann’s, the “fauve” André Derain faces flamboyant paintings by the expressionists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and works by Aurélie Nemours and Hans Hartung complete the presentation of a common history and present. The masterpieces from both sides of the Rhine testify of mutual influences and the fascination as well as the research and questionning the other.

L’exposition rend hommage à la ville de Sienne. Clemente a crée une nouvelle série de dix œuvres divisée en deux cycles et exposée dans la ville. La série « Winter Flowers in New York City » se compose de cinq œuvres élaborées en cinq ans (2010-2016). Ce cycle a été conçu en collaboration avec sa femme, Alba Primiceria, actrice et chorégraphe, qui a cueilli des fleurs à New York pendant les mois d’hiver.

This exhibition is a tribute to Siena. The artist has created ten new works of art, divided into two distinct cycles, to be exhibited in the city. The series of “Winter Flowers in New York City” consists of five works that engaged the artist for more than five years (2010-2016). This cycle was created in collaboration with the artist’s wife, Alba Primiceri, well-known actress and choreographer, who has picked some flowers in New York in the winter months.
