BIENNALE DE VENISE 2015 - PAVILLON JAPONAIS

L’artiste Chiharu Shiota représente le Japon à la 56ème  Biennale de Venise qui se déroule du 9 mai au 22 novembre 2015. Son projet The Key in the Hand, réalisé autour d’une installation in situ rassemblant plus de 50 000 clés, explore la notion de mémoire. En plaçant le corps du spectateur au cœur de son oeuvre, Chiharu Shiota insiste sur son pouvoir expressif, qu’elle nomme ‘la philosophie de l’instant’ Née en 1972 à Osaka, Chiharu Shiota vit à Berlin depuis 1997. Ancienne étudiante de Marina Abramovic, elle s’est rendue célèbre par ses installations in situ spectaculaires, faites d’accumulations d’objets et de fils tissés. Son travail combinant performance, sculpture, vidéo et installations a déjà été montré dans le monde entier. Ces dernières années, elle a bénéficié de nombreuses expositions institutionnelles : Smithsonian (Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington DC, en cours), Rochester Art Center (Minnesota, 2014), Walsall New Art Gallery (GB, 2014), Pittsburg Mattress Factory (2013), Manège (Moscou, 2013), Museum of Art of Kochi (Japon, 2013), Casia Asia (Barcelone, 2013), La Maison Rouge (Paris, 2012) ou la Fondation Gervasuti de Venise (2011). Chiharu Shiota est représentée par la Galerie Daniel Templon à Paris et Bruxelles.

VENICE BIENNALE 2015 - JAPAN PAVILION

The artist Chiharu Shiota represents Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale, which runs from 9 May until 22 November 2015. Her project The Key in the Hand is based on a site-specific installation made up of over 50,000 keys. It explores the notion of memory. In placing the spectator’s body at the heart of her sculptural work, Chiharu Shiota seeks to harness the expressive power of installations, which she describes as ‘the philosophy of the instant.’ Born in 1972 in Osaka, Chiharu Shiota has been living in Berlin since 1997. A former member of Marina Abramovic’s class, she is famous for her spectacular site-specific installations made of accumulated objects and woven thread. Her work combines performance, sculpture, video and installations and has already been exhibited throughout the world. Le Palais des Expositions présente l’une des rétrospectives les plus complètes du photographe américain David LaChapelle,  réunissant une centaine de pièces dont certaines inédites et de très grands formats. La ville de Rome a marqué la carrière de l’artiste : il s’est inspiré des fresques de Michelange à la Chapelle Sixtine pour sa série monumentale ‘Le Déluge’, qui a initié une rupture fondamentale dans son travail. L’exposition se concentre ainsi sur les œuvres qui ont suivi cette série, après 2006, marquées par des nouvelles considérations conceptuelles et esthétiques.

Palazzo delle Esposizioni presents one of the most important and exhaustive retrospective of American artist DavidLaChapelle, gathering 100 works, some presented for first time in a museum including many large-scale works. Rome has been a milestone in the artistic life of David LaChapelle. Modeled after Michelangelo’s impressive fresco in the Sistine Chapel, his monumental series The Deluge led to meaningful turning point in the artistic path of David LaChapelle. The exhibition thus focuses on the works starting from 2006, with “The Deluge”, when the American photographer began to work with new aesthetical and conceptual concerns.

De l’image sainte au signe visuel, de l’image sacrée au symbole, le 14ème accrochage de Maison Particulière interroge aussi bien les significations mentales que les figures emblématiques des icônes. Le duo d’artistes convié, Pierre et Gilles, a volontairement et spontanément choisi le mélange des genres « que l’on retrouve dans la culture populaire indienne ». From ‘icône’ in French to ‘icon’ in English, from holy image to visual sign, from the sacred image to the symbol, this fourteenth exhibition at Maison Particulière explores both the intellectual significance and the emblematic figures of icons. For Icon(s), the guest artistic duo Pierre et Gilles intentionally and spontaneously selected a mixture of genres “found in popular Indian culture”. Augmenting the works by Pierre and Gilles are the works of art selected by four art-collecting couples, each with different sensibilities: Myriam and Amaury de Solages, Charlotte and André Querton, Cookie and Cédric Liénart de Jeude, Béatrice and Philippe le Hodey and Jean-Claude Simoën.

La première exposition multimédia consacrée à Jean Paul Gaultier célèbre l’audace et l’invention de la mode avant-gardiste du créateur et explore ses sources d’inspiration, aussi éclectiques qu’impertinentes  Pensée comme une création à part entière, l’exposition rassemble, en plus des ensembles haute-couture et prêt à porter,  de nombreux objets et documents qui illustrent les collaborations artistiques de JPG avec le cinéma, la danse contemporaine ou la musique. Une place importante sera accordée à la photographie de mode grâce aux prêts de tirages souvent inédits de photographes et d’artistes contemporains renommés (Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Peter Lindbergh, David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Pierre et Gilles, Paolo Roversi, Robert Doisneau…).

This first multimedia exhibition devoted to the French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier celebrates the daring and inventiveness of his avant-garde fashion and explores his eclectic, impertinent sources of inspiration. The show— which Gaultier sees as a creation in its own right — brings together not only haute couture and ready-to-wear outfits, but numerous objects and archival documents illustrating his most inventive artistic partnerships, with filmakers, dancers, singers and artists. Fashion photography is there too, with often unpublished prints by well-known contemporary artists and photographers (Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Peter Lindbergh, David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Pierre & Gilles, Paolo Roversi, Robert Doisneau…).

Balagan – un terme perse qui signifie chaos, mais aussi exubérance – réunit des œuvres inédites de l’artiste allemand Norbert Bisky, dont la majorité ont été réalisées à Tel Aviv, dans le cadred’un échange d’atelier avec l’artiste israélien Erez Israeli. Une installation intégrant un bus brûlé, de grandes peintures colorées, des œuvres sur papier : les pièces exposées donnent à voir l’ambiguité de l’univers de l’artiste, qui balance entre angoisse et joie de vivre.

Balagan – the Persian term for chaos and confusion, which can also be linked to partying and exuberance – brings together new works by Norbert Bisky. The majority of the pieces were completed in Tel Aviv where the German artist experimented an atelier swap with fellow artist Erez Israeli, from January to March. His burnt bus installation, his large scale colourful paintings and smaller works on paper give some insights into both sides of his ambiguous work : angst and ‘joie de vivre’.

The imaginary dialogue between Rops and Fabre will unveil, question and challenge time. Exhibitions and events will take place in different locations : Musée Félicien Rops, Maison de la Culture, Théâtre de Namur, Eglise Saint-Loup, the Citadelle and the city streets.

Le Brooklyn museum présente Kehinde Wiley : A New Republic, la première rétrospective de l’artiste américain Kehinde Wiley, du 20 février au 24 mai 2015. The Brooklyn Museum presents Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, the first museum survey of the artist’s rich and prolific career, on view from February 20 through May 24, 2015. Comprised of approximately sixty objects, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic highlights the range of the artist’s work. The exhibition includes his early portrait paintings, inspired by the artist’s observation of street life in Harlem and set to the visual language of classical European portraiture, as well as his recent explorations in sculpture and stained glass. Kehinde Wiley has received critical acclaim for his investigation of race, power, and the politics of representation. L’artiste Kehinde Wiley s’est vu décerner la Médaille des Arts du Département d’Etat américain. Le Secrétaire d’Etat John Kerry a remis cette distinction à Kehinde Wiley le 21 janvier, en l’honneur de son engagement substantiel, par le biais de son œuvre plastique, pour le développement de la diplomatie culturelle.  L’artiste américain, salué pour ses grands portraits mettant en scène de jeunes Afro-Américains dans le style de la peinture classique européenne, vit entre Pékin, Dakar et New York, et personnifie l’état d’esprit “international” de cette distinction.Kehinde Wiley fera l’objet d’une grande rétrospective au Brooklyn Museum, du 20 février au 24 mai 2015. Après son étape new yorkaise, l’exposition sera présentée au Modern Art Museum de Forth Worth, Texas (16 octobre 2015 – 10 janvier 2016), au Seattle Art Museum, Washington (12 février – 8 mai 2016) et au Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, Virginia ( 3 juin – 5 septembre 2016).

KEHINDE WILEY WAS AWARDED THE US STATE DEPARTMENT MEDAL OF ARTS

Kehinde Wiley was awarded the US State Department Medal of Arts.   Secretary of State John Kerry presented the medal to Kehinde Wiley on January 21, in honor of his substantive commitment to the US State Department’s cultural diplomacy outreach through the visual arts. Known for his large scale paintings of young African Americans, depicted in the style of European royal portraits, the American artist embodies the international spirit of the award, living in between Beijing, Dakar, and New York. Kehinde Wiley will be the subject of a major survey exhibition, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, at the Brooklyn Museum from February 20 to May 24, 2015. Following its New York showing, the exhibition will travel to the Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, Texas (October 16, 2015 – January 10, 2016), the Seattle Art Museum, Washington (February 12 – May 8, 2016) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia (June 3 – September 5, 2016).

Le Dr Bhau Daji Lad City Museum de Mumbai présente 7000 Museums à partir du 11 décembre 2014. L’exposition, qui intègre un ensemble d’œuvres de l’artiste indien Atul Dodiya s’incrit dans la continuation d’une programmation qui encourage les artistes contemporains à engager un dialogue avec l’histoire du musée et ses collections. Dans les aquarelles et huiles sur toile exposés , Atul Dodiya aborde avec humour et poésie les questions de représentation culturelle, et la sémantique à l’œuvre dans les musées ; mais il fait également référence à des évènements marquants de la lutte pour l’indépendance, entremêlés à des figures de l’histoire de l’art.

The exhibition 7000 Museums is a continuation of the Museum’s curatorial series ‘Engaging Tradition’ which encourages contemporary artists to engage with the Museum’s history and collection. Through his watercolours and oil painting, exhibited in a dialogue with varied conceptual frameworks from the Museum’s collection, Atul Dodiya humorously adresses ideas of local cultural representation as well as the semantics of museums and museum displays. His works also reference historical events from the freedom struggle interrupted by moments of art history.
