Chiharu Shiota

The artist

Born in 1972 in the Japanese city of Osaka, Chiharu Shiota has been living and working in Berlin since 1997. Using woven yarn, the artist combines performance, body art and installations in a process that places at its center the body. Her protean artistic approach plays with the notions of temporality, movement and dreams, and demands a dual engagement from the viewer, both physical and emotional. In recent years, Chiharu Shiota has been widely exhibited around the world, including at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2003), the New Museum of Jakarta and the SCAD Museum of Art, USA (2017), the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf (2014), the Smithsonian, Washington DC (2014) and Japan’s Kochi Museum of Art (2013). In 2015 Chiharu Shiota represented Japan at the Venice Biennale with her installation The Key in the Hand. In 2018, she had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Kyoto, and in 2019, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo presented a major survey exhibition highlighting her entire oeuvre.

VENICE BIENNALE 2015 - JAPAN PAVILION

The artist Chiharu Shiota represents Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale, which runs from 9 May until 22 November 2015. Her project The Key in the Hand is based on a site-specific installation made up of over 50,000 keys. It explores the notion of memory. In placing the spectator’s body at the heart of her sculptural work, Chiharu Shiota seeks to harness the expressive power of installations, which she describes as ‘the philosophy of the instant.’ Born in 1972 in Osaka, Chiharu Shiota has been living in Berlin since 1997. A former member of Marina Abramovic’s class, she is famous for her spectacular site-specific installations made of accumulated objects and woven thread. Her work combines performance, sculpture, video and installations and has already been exhibited throughout the world. Over recent years her work was featured in numerous museum exhibitions: Smithsonian (Arthur M.Sackler Gallery, Washington DC, on view), Rochester Art Center (Minnesota, 2014), Walsall New Art Gallery (UK, 2014), Pittsburgh Mattress Factory (2013), Manege (Moscow, 2013), Museum of Art of Kochi (Japan, 2013), Casia Asia (Barcelona, 2013), La Maison Rouge (Paris, 2012) or the Gervasuti Foundation in Venice (Italy, 2011).

From September 20th 2014 to November 22th 2014 Galerie Templon is proud to announce artists Philippe Cognée, Gérard Garouste, Jitish Kallat and Chiharu Shiota’s participation to the 2014 Busan Biennale (September 20 – November 22) in Korea. Entitled Inhabiting the world,this edition gathers around 160 artists from 30 countries, with a main exhibition, two special exhibitions, diverse academic programs international exchange events and participatory events. Under the direction of Olivier Kaeppelin, the main exhibition focuses on the roles of art and artists in aworld of permanent state of economic, ecological and geo-political uncertainty. Inhabiting the world intends to explore the extraordinary constellation of artistic responses to the contemporary situations.

From August 30th 2014 to June 7th 2015 Japanese performance and installation artist Chiharu Shiota installs a monumental yet intimate work in the Sackler pavilion this summer. Haunted by the traces that the human body leaves behind, the work amasses personal memories of lost individuals and past moments through an accumulation of discarded shoes and notes collected by the artist. Visit the Sackler pavilion during museum hours between Monday, August 18, and Thursday, August 21, to see Shiota’s progress on the installation. (…)

JULY 18 – OCTOBER 19, 2014 In the same vein as Marina Abramovic, Chiharu Shiota places the body at the heart of her sculptural work, weaving huge environments out of black threads that imprison objects. Thus liberated from any useful purpose, they generate new poetic and moving visions. After selecting 10 costumes from Le Guépard designed by Luisa Spinatelli, Chiharu Shiota has devised an unusual installation for the Ballet National de Marseille and the Vieille Charité that is both monumental and delicate. co-organised by the Ballet National de Marseille & Museums of Marseille An exceptional setting for contemporary installations, since its renovation the chapel of the Vieille Charité has welcomed works by renowned international artists the likes of Christian Boltanski (Les anges, Les ombres, 1986), Gabriel Orozco (Oval Billiard Table, 1996) and Javier Perez (La Torre de Sonido, 2001).

From May 24th to September 28th 2014 The Associazione Culturale Dello Scompiglio presents “A Long Day”, the new installation by the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, curated by Franziska Nori, created specifically for the exhibition space at Dello Scompiglio.
