Chiharu Shiota

The artist

Born in 1972 in the Japanese city of Osaka, Chiharu Shiota has been living and working in Berlin since 1997. Using woven yarn, the artist combines performance, body art and installations in a process that places at its center the body. Her protean artistic approach plays with the notions of temporality, movement and dreams, and demands a dual engagement from the viewer, both physical and emotional. In recent years, Chiharu Shiota has been widely exhibited around the world, including at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2003), the New Museum of Jakarta and the SCAD Museum of Art, USA (2017), the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf (2014), the Smithsonian, Washington DC (2014) and Japan’s Kochi Museum of Art (2013). In 2015 Chiharu Shiota represented Japan at the Venice Biennale with her installation The Key in the Hand. In 2018, she had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Kyoto, and in 2019, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo presented a major survey exhibition highlighting her entire oeuvre.

From January 17th to March 30st 2014 Chiharu Shiota frequently uses found objects within her sculptural installations, particularly those that resonate with personal and emotional histories. Doors and windows from demolished and derelict buildings, clothing, shoes, old furniture and vintage suitcases are frequent motifs within her work. From october 04st to November 17th 2013 Reprenant le projet de la Maison Rouge et de la Sucrière, Chiharu Shiota nous propose, pour le Carré Sainte-Anne de Montpellier « After the dream 2013 » : une réalisation spécifique à l’architecture du lieu et à son identité, en utilisant le plafond et les piliers comme structures d’environnement immersif. Cinq très longues robes blanches pendues au plafond, entre les piliers, dans tout l’espace. Un fil noir emprisonne les robes dans un tissage complexe évoquant des nids de chenilles ou plus encore des toiles d’araignées.(…)

From September 12th 2013 to May 31st 2014 The site-specific installation of new works by Shiota will fill the eight rooms in the building at 516 Sampsonia Way—a 19th-century row home with a storied past—which is suited to the artist’s work. Its interior is cosmetically untouched; the raw condition of the building lends itself well to reflections on the past and the conjuring of memories. From October 23th 2012 to March 30th 2013 Shiota’s installations produce their own spaces, where hundreds of invisible threads that bond us to things can be seen. In these domestic scenarios she proposes, threads become bridges between a bride’s dress and the absent subject, a piano, suitcases and a mirror. In her work, these threads are veins with tears, fear for abyss, life and death; threads that are plots of particular and universal stories, interweaving like the inverted roots of a tree, just like a rhizome through multiple branches that hold up the relationship between I and the world. From October 5th 2012 to January 24th 2013 Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art, an exhibition co-curated by Franziska Nori (Director of the CCC Strozzina) and Barbara Dawson (Director of the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane), will be presenting work by contemporary artists who exam today’s existential state of societal mind. Their work explores the kind of questions man asks himself in his relationship with his own interior being, his body and the outside world.
