Avec sa dernière exposition, le Mart poursuit sa confrontation entre des artistes et des mouvements artistiques de différentes époques, dépassant les limites temporelles. Le protagoniste incontesté de « son temps » et « notre temps » est Sandro Botticelli. Sont présentée dans cette exposition une série de chefs-d’œuvre, dont « Pallade e il Centauro » prêté par la Galerie des Offices, « Venere de la Galleria Sabauda de Turin et Compianto sul Cristo morto » du musée Poldi Pezzoli de Milan. L’influence de Botticelli se retrouve à travers les œuvres d’artistes contemporains, dont Giosetta Fioroni, David LaChapelle, Michelangelo Pistoletto et John Currin, et les mondes du cinéma et de la mode, assimilant l’image de Vénus à celle de Chiara Ferragni.

With its latest exhibition, the Mart continues comparing artists and art movements spanning different eras, overcoming temporal limits. The undisputed protagonist of “His Time” and “Our Time” is Sandro Botticelli. On display, as part of the exhibition are a series of masterpieces, including Pallade e il Centauro on loan from the Uffizi Gallery, Venere from the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, andCompianto sul Cristo morto from the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan. Botticelli’s influence also echoes the works of contemporary artists, including Giosetta Fioroni, David LaChapelle, Michelangelo Pistoletto and John Currin, and the worlds of film and fashion, comparing the image of Venus with that of Chiara Ferragni.

« Sur les chemins du paradis » explore les différents volets du paradis à travers ce qu’en ont dit les trois monothéismes – judaïsme, christianisme et islam – et les productions qu’en ont tiré les artistes depuis deux mille ans.  L’exposition inaugurale des Franciscaines de Deauville parcourt, aux côtés d’artistes de tout siècle et de toute région occidentale et orientale, la transcription historique et artistique des textes fondateurs du paradis, du mythe d’Enki en Mésopotamie à la figuration de l’Incarnation par Bill Viola. Il s’agit donc de cerner les influences, les échanges, l’interpénétration des codes iconographiques du IIIe millénaire avant J.C au XXIe siècle.

“Sur les chemins du paradis” explores the different aspects of heaven through what the three monotheisms – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – have said about it and the work that artists have produced for two thousand years. The inaugural exhibition of the Franciscaines de Deauville, alongside artists from all centuries and from all western and eastern regions, explores the historical and artistic transcription of the founding texts of heaven, from the myth of Enki in Mesopotamia to the figuration of Incarnation by Bill Viola. It is therefore a question of identifying the influences, the exchanges, the interpenetration of iconographic codes from the 3rd millennium BC to the 21st century.

L’exposition présente une sélection d’icônes anciennes en provenance d’Europe et de Russie – représentant tour à tour le Christ, la Mère de Dieu, ou des Saints individuels – dont la simplicité frappante les distingue en tant qu’objets de vénération intemporels. Un second ensemble d’œuvres d’artistes du XIXe et XXe siècle, telsPierre et Gilles, Charles Filiger, Lucien Levy-Dhurmer, explore la composition frontale et sans profondeur des icônes. L’exposition aborde également l’utilisation que font les artistes contemporains du langage iconographique, à l’instar de Yan Pei-Ming et Wim Delvoye.

The exhibition shows a selection of ancient icons from Europe and Russia – depicting variously Christ, the Mother of God, or individual saints – the striking simplicity of which sets them apart as timeless objects of veneration. A second set of works by 19th and 20th century artists such as Pierre et Gilles, Charles Filiger and Lucien Levy-Dhurmer explores the frontal and depth-less composition of icons. The exhibition also discusses the use that contemporary artists like Yan Pei-Ming and Wim Delvoye make of iconographic language.

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous avons appris la disparition de Juliao Sarmento hier mardi 4 mai à Lisbonne. Né en 1948, Juliao Sarmento s’est imposé depuis 40 ans comme une des grandes figures de l’art contemporain portugais. Il a été parmi les premiers de sa génération à accéder à une vaste reconnaissance internationale, exposant dans les musées les plus prestigieux (dont le Tate Modern à Londres, le Centro Contemporáneo de Malaga en Espagne, le Contemporary Arts Center à Cincinnati et la Fundaçao Serralves à Porto) et sélectionné à deux reprises pour représenter son pays à la Biennale de Venise. Son œuvre multiforme, à la fois conceptuelle et sensuelle, explore les confins du désir et de la représentation dans une approche mêlant peinture, vidéo et installation. Il a su créer un langage propre aux motifs récurrents : figure féminine archétypale, architecture moderniste, lignes végétales, nombreuses références à la littérature et au cinéma. Son travail laisse une large place à la question de l’écart entre réel et fiction.
Parfaitement francophone et amoureux de la France, son art et son cinéma, Juliao Sarmento a toujours suscité une grande admiration en France où il a souvent exposé, notamment au Centre Pompidou, au MAMAC de Nice ou à la Fondation Gulbenkian de Paris. D’une curiosité et d’une énergie contagieuses, Juliao Sarmento laissera le souvenir d’un artiste passionné, profondément humain et généreux. Nos pensées vont à sa famille.

JULIAO SARMENTO (1948 – 2021)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Juliao Sarmento, yesterday May 4, in Lisbon. Born in 1948, Juliao Sarmento was a major figure of Portuguese art from the 1970s onwards. He was among the first of his generation to achieve wide international recognition, exhibiting in numerous prestigious museums (including the Tate Modern in London, the Centro Contemporáneo de Malaga in Spain, the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati and the Fundaçao Serralves in Porto). Throughout his life, he carved a place for himself among the great thinkers and artists of contemporary art. His work explored the terrain of desire and representation in an approach combining painting, video, sound and visual installations. Exploiting a huge variety of combinations, Sarmento created an oeuvre with recurring motifs: the archetypal woman, modernist architectural images, plant-like lines, references to literature and the cinema. A large part of his work addresses issues of fragmentation, the gap between the real and fictional.
Fluent in French and a lover of French culture and cinema, Juliao Sarmento was widely admired in our country, where his work was the subject of many museum exhibitions, including Pompidou, MAMAC in Nice or most recently the Gulbenkian Foundation in Paris. A passionate artist, Juliao Sarmento radiated with relentless curiosity and fierce energy. Profoundly humane and generous, he we will greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family.

« The Soul Trembles » est la plus grande exposition consacrée à l’artiste internationale Chiharu Shiota. Une centaine d’œuvres y sont exposées, de sa production des années 1990 à ses dernières pièces. En plus des installations à grande échelle, il y a des sculptures, des vidéos de performances, des photographies, des dessins et des matériaux liés à ses projets de scénographie. Parmi ces œuvres, il y a des installations à grande échelle dans lesquelles des fils noirs et rouges traversent et enveloppent tout l’espace, constituant l’une de ses séries d’œuvres les plus représentatives. Les innombrables lignes tracées par le fil font allusion à divers phénomènes et à un ensemble complexe de liens et de connexions, tout en nous attirant également vers les limites les plus profonds de l’existence. À l’origine de ces travaux se trouvent les thèmes incessamment poursuivis par Shiota de la vie et la mort, ainsi qu’une enquête fondamentale sur ce que nous poursuivons tous dans la vie et où nous allons. Le sous-titre de cette exposition, « The Soul Trembles », fait référence aux émotions du cœur qui ne peuvent être exprimées avec des mots, en plus d’être une manifestation de pensées que l’artiste espère transmettre aux autres.

“The Soul Trembles” is the largest exhibition devoted to the internationally active artist Chiharu Shiota. On display are some one hundred works ranging from her 1990s output to her latest pieces. In addition to large-scale installation, there are sculptures, performance videos, photographs, drawings, and materials related to her stage design projects.  Among these works are large-scale installations in which black and red threads run through and envelop the entire space, constituting one of her most representative artwork series. The countless lines traced out in thread allude to various phenomena and a complex array of links and connections, while also beckoning us towards the deepest reaches of existence. At the root of these works lie Shiota’s incessantly-pursued themes of life and death, as well as a fundamental inquiry into what we all pursue in life, and where we are heading.
The subtitle of this exhibition, “The Soul Trembles,” refers to the emotional stirrings of the heart that cannot be put into words, in addition to being a manifestation of thoughts the artist hopes to convey to others.

Il s’agit de la première œuvre d’art en vitrail conçue par Kehinde Wiley à entrer dans une collection publique dans le monde. Le titre et la pose de Saint Adélaïde sont dérivées d’un vitrail original du XIXe siècle représentant le Saint Empereur Romain Otto Ier et son épouse du 10e siècle dans la Chapelle Royale de St Ferdinand, Paris. Dans le vitrail de Wiley, la figure de la sainte est remplacée par le mannequin de Brooklyn Mark Shavers – un jeune homme noir portant un jean pâle, un pull rayé et des baskets dorées, avec une fourrure autour du cou. Il s’agit de l’une des trois œuvres d’art en vitrail (Saint Adélaïde, Saint Rémi et Saint Amélie) inspirées du vitrail historique de cette chapelle conçu par le peintre français Jean Auguste-Dominque-Ingres et réalisé à Sèvres.

It is the first stained glass artwork designed by Kehinde Wiley to enter a public art collection in the world. The title and pose of Saint Adelaide derives from an original 19th century stained glass window depicting the 10th century saint and consort of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto I in the Royal Chapel of St Ferdinand, Paris. In Wiley’s stained glass artwork, the figure of the female saint is substituted for Brooklyn model Mark Shavers – a young black man wearing pale jeans, a stripy jumper and gold trainers, with a fur around his neck.
It is one of three stained glass artworks (Saint Adelaide, Saint Remi and Saint Amelie) inspired by historic stained glass in this chapel designed by French painter Jean Auguste-Dominque-Ingres and made at Sèvres.

Cette exposition présente d’importantes acquisitions effectuées ces dernières années, en mettant l’accent sur les œuvres de deux membres fondateurs du mouvement Supports/Surfaces: Patrick Saytour et Claude Viallat. Claude Viallat s’attache aux éléments primaires et structuraux de la peinture, soit la toile, la couleur et la surface. Dès 1966, il travaille sur la couleur, celle-ci étant à la fois sujet et objet. Le châssis disparaît. La toile libre est peinte et sur ce fond de couleur, Viallat place des empreintes au pochoir, de manière répétitive et sérielle. La plupart des œuvres ici présentées montre que pour lui, la couleur est élémentaire pour souligner les formes répétées qui confèrent à son art des dimensions et un rythme cohérents, tout à fait caractéristiques du mouvement Supports/Surfaces.

In this exhibition important acquisitions from recent years are shown, focusing on works by two founding members of the Supports/Surfaces movement: Patrick Saytour and Claude Viallat. As a representative of the Nouvelle Peinture, Claude Viallat focuses on the primary and structural elements of painting: the canvas, the colour and the surface. Since 1966, he has been working on colour, which is both the subject and the object. The stretcher disappears. The free canvas is painted and against this background of colour, Viallat places stencil prints, repeatedly and in series. Most of the works presented here show that for him color is elementary to convey the repeated forms that lend his art coherent dimensions and rhythm, so characteristic of Supports/Surfaces.

“LOKAME THARAVADU” – EXPOSITION COLLECTIVE

Lokame Tharavadu (Le monde est une famille) est une grande exposition d’art contemporain organisée par des artistes malayali, organisée par la Kochi Biennale Foundation. Plus de 260 artistes exposent une collection de leurs œuvres, pour mettre en avant chacune de leurs pratiques. Jitish Kallat présente dans cette exposition « Epilogue » (2011), dans laquelle l’artiste commémore la vie de son défunt père en imaginant les quelques 22 000 lunes qu’il a vues au cours de sa vie. Organisées par mois de chaque année, les lunes sont représentées par des “pains rotis”, dont les bords se développent ou s’effritent au fur et à mesure que la lune croît et décroît. Les «roti lunes», motif récurrent de l’œuvre de l’artiste, distillent le temps vécu en ses composants essentiels – le pain quotidien, la routine récurrente – tout en le reliant à un phénomène céleste partagé et éternellement récurrent. Au bout du chemin parcouru par le spectateur avec Kallat, alors qu’il retrace la vie de son père, se trouve une trame poignante avec une lune solitaire, représentant la nuit précédant le 2 décembre 1998, date de la mort du père de l’artiste.

“LOKAME THARAVADU” – GROUP SHOW

Lokame Tharavadu (The World Is One Family) is a large-scale curated contemporary art exhibition of Malayali artists, organized by the Kochi Biennale Foundation. Over 260 artists will be exhibiting a collection of their works, to foreground each of their practices.  Jitish Kallat presents in this exhibition “Epilogue” (2011) in which the artist memorialises the life-time of his late father by picturing the approximately 22 000 moons that he saw during his lifetime. Strructured in monthly slots for each year, the moons are represented by “rotis breads”, the edges of which grow or crumble away as the moon waxes and wanes. The “roti moons”, a recurring pattern in the artist’s work, distill lived time into its essential components—the daily bread, the recurring routine—even as they connect it to a shared, eternally recurring celestial phenomenon. At the end of the path, the viewer is invited to walk with Kallat as he retraces his father’s life, a poignant frame with a lone moon, representing the night before 2nd December 1998, when the artist’s father died.

Chiharu Shiota présente sa première exposition personnelle au Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire. Shiota crée des lieux vidés de toute présence humaine, de toute présence physique mais où littéralement les fils de la mémoire, les empreintes temporelles viennent tisser des toiles arachnéennes qui lient les objets inertes au temps passé, à des instants, des présences qui n’existent plus que dans la mémoire.

She has created spaces that are bereft of any human presence, of any physical presence but where threads of memory, symbols of time are woven into a web that links inert objects to the past, to moments, to presences that now only exist in memory.
